Strengthening Indigenous Studies positions us to better support Indigenous communities and Nations,鈥 said conference co-chair Susan Hill, director of 麻豆视频鈥檚 Centre for Indigenous Studies and an associate professor of Indigenous Studies and history in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

With sessions planned on everything from food sovereignty to language revitalization and contemporary Indigenous cinema, the 2023 event is the first in-person NAISA conference since 2019, when it was hosted by the University of Waikato in New Zealand. 麻豆视频 had planned to host the 2020 conference, which was cancelled due to the pandemic and rescheduled for this year.

The conference will highlight how Toronto 鈥 which originates from the Mohawk word 鈥淭karonto,鈥 meaning 鈥渨here the trees stand in the water鈥 鈥 has been home to the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe Peoples and part of the original homelands of the Wendat People.

麻豆视频 News spoke with Hill and fellow conference co-chair Karyn Recollet, assistant professor in the Women & Gender Studies Institute in the Faculty of Arts & Science, about what to expect at NAISA 2023 鈥 which will include panel and roundtable discussions, presentations of research papers, film screenings, performances and more.

Hundreds of attendees are coming from around the world 鈥 what will they experience at this year鈥檚 NAISA conference?

Hill: One of the things that we committed to as the local host committee was to take the lead in terms of our own cultural values that we bring from our specific communities 鈥 and also honouring the practices that are common in the Toronto Indigenous community.

One of those key pieces was about ethical care and doing our best to provide spaces that would meet people鈥檚 needs 鈥 so we were very purposeful in choosing locations that were close together.

It was also important for us to feed our guests 鈥 that鈥檚 a key value that鈥檚 embodied in the communities all around us. When you come to somebody鈥檚 home, they will offer you a meal or a beverage. That鈥檚 such an important part of hospitality, and in inviting our friends and colleagues from around the world, we want to make sure we鈥檙e treating them as if they were coming into our home.

We鈥檙e particularly excited about the fact that we've partnered with local Indigenous chefs to help make that happen and to provide our guests with the foods that come from the land and the waters of the territory.

In academia, sometimes we take food for granted and think, 鈥淥h, it's just fuel for the body.鈥 But in Indigenous cultures, we're taught that it's food for our mind, our body and our souls. And so we've tried to make that as fruitful as possible in this gathering, and also in everything we do in nourishing people鈥檚 minds, bodies and spirits in the work we鈥檙e doing together.

Through NAISA鈥檚 call for papers and in your planning, did any themes for the conference emerge?

Recollet: In reaching out to our various partners 鈥 including 麻豆视频 Mississauga 鈥 when we were starting to imagine what this conference would look like, some very interesting interconnections and webs started to develop, which helped the planning process quite a bit.

We knew that to determine the shape of our gathering, we wanted to focus on Black and Indigenous relationships, on queer and Two-Spirit thought and thinking, and to acknowledge that Toronto is a very special place that has a unique relationship to water. That helped us to think through some of the main ideas and offerings we might be able to have. Drawing on our relationships with the land 鈥 and with each other 鈥 helped in mapping things out.

What will be some of the highlights at this year鈥檚 conference?

Hill: One of the goals that NAISA has always tried to embody with their conferences is recognizing that the papers that get proposed and accepted are going to come from all over the place, but also making sure that there's time and space for both the people coming from other places, as well as the people from the local area, to have the opportunity to learn more about the host area.

Here in in Toronto, we've tried to be really thoughtful about the ways that we curate those particular opportunities 鈥 for example, we鈥檒l have walking tours of our campus, OCAD University, Toronto Metropolitan University, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum. So, the folks who are coming to our campus from all over the world have a chance to learn about some of the things that are happening here on the ground in our city, at our universities and arts organizations.

Recollet: Another special moment we鈥檝e envisioned is offering opportunities for graduate-student mentorship, where the students can sit and share a meal together and talk to each other about their work and knowledge transmission.

We鈥檝e also curated spaces called 鈥CARE Hubs鈥 in both the buildings that are hosting the sessions, because sometimes conferences can be draining 鈥 you might need a quiet space to centre and just enjoy solitude. So those will have cots, medicines, soothing music, some magazines 鈥 spaces to relax and enjoy.

The welcome ceremony at Convocation Hall will feature singers and drummers, and we encourage everyone to visit the book fair and market hall at the Howard Ferguson Dining Hall, where more than 30 publishers and academic institutions will be set up.

What do you hope attendees take away from the conference?

Hill: We hope that all our visitors will have the opportunity to engage with some amazing people who are connected within this global network and are able to walk away with a deeper understanding about the vitality and rigour of Indigenous studies.

A lot of times people think it鈥檚 just about culture, but it鈥檚 important to understand the deep knowledge that goes into the revitalization and the celebration of the cultures from which we come 鈥 and the hard work being put into creating vibrant futures for the generations to come.

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 11 May 2023 20:57:30 +0000 siddiq22 301622 at Stealing the show: Conference aimed at event professionals first of its kind on campus /bulletin/stealing-show-conference-aimed-event-professionals-first-its-kind-campus Stealing the show: Conference aimed at event professionals first of its kind on campus sungjimi Wed, 03/20/2019 - 10:27

From organizing staff retirement parties to receiving a foreign dignitary on campus, you can bet event planners at the University of Toronto have been working hard behind the scenes.

Main Event, an upcoming conference for event planning professionals at 麻豆视频, is formally bringing together all the internal staff who are involved in organizing events. The April 2 conference is being organized by the Office of the President and will be the first of its kind for the university.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of creativity across the three campuses when it comes to event planning. I think the challenge is meeting the objectives of the local division and also giving it that consistent 麻豆视频 brand,鈥 says Bryn MacPherson, assistant vice-president in the Office of the President and chief of protocol.

For example, as the chief of protocol, MacPherson often gets questions from staff about how to receive guests or dignitaries in a consistent manner befitting of the university.

鈥淚 think that鈥檚 something many 麻豆视频 event planners are looking for: a way to ensure best practices are shared broadly across the university,鈥 she says.

Stevie Asselstine, manager of donor relations and advancement at the Rotman School of Management, says she鈥檚 looking forward to expanding her network at Main Event. Prior to her role at Rotman, where she is the sole alumni event planner, Asselstine worked in the central division of university advancement with a team of six event planners.

鈥淎 lot of my former DUA coworkers have gone on to other divisions so I know that I can call on them for ideas, which is great, but I know that not everybody has that,鈥 says Asselstine.

In addition to networking, Main Event will feature skills development sessions such as speechwriting and will address topics ranging from complying with accessibility standards to managing disruptions from the public. Special guests will include President Meric Gertler and Stewart Wheeler, the chief of protocol of Canada, who will deliver the keynote.

MacPherson says a newly created 麻豆视频 Event Professionals Group is already prompting conversations among 麻豆视频 staff who are looking to bounce ideas off of their colleagues. The group, run as an Office 365 team, is intended to be a reliable network and community for event planning professionals at the university and will help facilitate interoffice collaboration.

鈥淭here are conferences and associations outside of the university, but we thought, why not harness the expertise we have within the university and share with one another?鈥 says MacPherson.

Stealing the show: Conference aimed at event professionals first of its kind on campus

An on-campus announcement about the Canada Research Chairs program is an example of an event co-ordinated by 麻豆视频 staff.
