Innovation</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/u-t-mississauga" hreflang="en">麻豆视频 Mississauga</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/u-t-scarborough" hreflang="en">麻豆视频 Scarborough</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">Sonia Evans's research is opening the door to novel strategies for engineering crops that are more productive and resilient</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><strong>Sonia Evans</strong> has published in high-profile scientific journals, won several awards and completed a PhD from the University of Toronto, but she traces her achievements to someone who had no formal education whatsoever: her grandmother.</p> <p>A believer in the healing power of plants, Evans鈥檚 grandmother hailed from a southern Nigerian village, and regularly crafted plant-based traditional medicines for ailments ranging from infertility to skin conditions.</p> <p>鈥淪he knew the type of plants to go to, and made different concoctions for us,鈥 says Evans, who defended her PhD in 麻豆视频 Mississauga's department of cell and systems biology in November and is&nbsp;poised to continue her research as a postdoctoral fellow at 麻豆视频 Scarborough. 鈥淪he never knew the names of the plants, but she knew the types of plants to put together to get the result she was expecting.鈥</p> <p>Evans, who was born and raised in Nigeria, completed undergraduate studies in plant science in her home country before earning a master's degree in plant biology in Israel.&nbsp;With a growing interest in plant metabolism, she decided to pursue a PhD at 麻豆视频 Mississauga under the supervision of <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/biology/people/michael-phillips"><strong>Michael Phillips</strong></a>, an associate professor in the department of biology.</p> <p>鈥淸Phillips] was really involved in plant metabolism鈥 and really trying to understand how plants make chemicals that are important not just for their growth, development and for photosynthesis, but also for us,鈥 Evans says. 鈥淭hese are chemicals that we use as drugs, flavours, fragrances, cosmetics and biofuels. I was really interested in that part of the research.鈥</p> <p>Since joining the Phillips lab, Evans has focused on how plants control carbon supply towards the production of isoprenoids 鈥 high-value compounds that are critical to plant growth, defense and crop productivity and also have a range of industrial and pharmaceutical applications.</p> <p>Her research has had a huge impact on the field. In 2024 alone, Evans published two papers in the prestigious <em>Nature</em> journals, as first author.</p> <p>The most recent paper, <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/biology/news/sonia-e-evans-published-nature-plants">published in <em>Nature Plants</em> in October</a>, sheds light on a decades-old mystery: the origins of pyruvate, a vital precursor for production of isoprenoids, amino acids and fatty acids in chloroplasts, which are responsible for plant photosynthesis.&nbsp;The research revealed that Rubisco, a critical enzyme that鈥檚 responsible for fixing carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, also plays a secondary role in supplying pyruvate.</p> <p>This discovery not only redefines how scientists understand plant metabolism, but also solves a long-standing paradox of the origin of pyruvate, with Evans鈥檚 findings providing a critical link between photosynthesis and the production of isoprenoids. By uncovering how plants channel carbon toward these valuable compounds, her research opens the door to innovative biotechnological strategies for engineering crops with enhanced productivity and resilience.</p> <p>The previous paper, <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/biology/hot-papers/sonia-evans-phd-student-phillips-lab-publishes-nature-communications">published in <em>Nature Communications</em> in February</a>, laid the groundwork for how a key metabolic pathway could be engineered in plants&nbsp;for synthetic biology applications.</p> <p>All the more impressive: Evans managed these accomplishments while carrying out her responsibilities as mother to a young child 鈥 which she credits to a strong support system of family, her spouse, friends and peers.&nbsp;鈥淚t鈥檚 been a learning curve鈥 but I have tried to take everything one step at a time, and check myself every day,鈥 she says.</p> <p>Evans鈥檚 scholarly excellence resulted in her earning the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/biology/explore-graduate-studies/graduate-awards#bondarAward">Roberta Bondar Graduate Student Excellence Award</a>&nbsp;last fall. They were abundant in terrestrial communities during the Early Permian period and are distant relatives of all the reptiles today.</p> <p>As small omnivores and herbivores, <em>Captorhinus</em> and its relatives had to scrounge for food while avoiding being preyed upon by large, meat-eating amphibians and ancient relatives of mammals. 鈥淥ne of the ways captorhinids could do this was by having breakable tail vertebrae,鈥 says lead author LeBlanc.&nbsp;鈥淟ike many present-day lizard species, such as skinks, that can detach their tails to escape or distract a predator, the middle of many tail vertebrae had cracks in them."</p> <p><img alt class="media-image attr__typeof__foaf:Image img__fid__7737 img__view_mode__media_large attr__format__media_large" height="388" src="/sites/default/files/2018-03-05-tail-second-resized.jpg" typeof="foaf:Image" width="750" loading="lazy"></p> <p><em>The present day spiny-tailed iguana is similar to captorhinids, small reptiles that lived 289 million years ago and could detach their tails to escape the grasp of predators</em></p> <p>It is likely that these cracks acted like the perforated lines between two paper towel sheets, allowing vertebrae to break in half along planes of weakness. 鈥淚f a predator grabbed hold of one of these reptiles, the vertebra would break at the crack and the tail would drop off, allowing the captorhinid to escape relatively unharmed,鈥 says Reisz, a <a href="http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards/Distinguished_Professors.htm">Distinguished Professor</a> of biology at 麻豆视频 Mississauga.</p> <p>The authors note that being the only reptiles with such an escape strategy may have been a key to their success, because they were the most common reptiles of their time, and by the end of the Permian period 251 million years ago, captorhinids had dispersed across the ancient supercontinent of Pangaea. This trait disappeared from the fossil record when <em>Captorhinus </em>died out 鈥 and it re-evolved in lizards 70 million years ago.</p> <p>The researchers were able to examine more than 70 tail vertebrae 鈥 both juveniles and adults 鈥 and partial tail skeletons with splits that ran through their vertebrae. They compared these skeletons to those of other reptilian relatives of captorhinids, but it appears that this ability is restricted to this family of reptiles in the Permian period.</p> <h3><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-21526-3#Ack1">Read the research in <em>Scientific Reports</em></a></h3> <p>Using various paleontological and histological techniques, the authors discovered that the cracks were features that formed naturally as the vertebrae were developing. Interestingly, the research team found that young captorhinids had well-formed cracks, while those in some adults tended to fuse up. However, in one group of tetrapods, temnospondyls (which are thought to be the ancestors of modern amphibians), these denticles were also found on small, bony plates that filled the large soft part of the palate. The entire roof of the mouth was covered with literally thousands of these tiny teeth that they used to grab prey. Since these toothy plates were suspended in soft tissue, they are often lost or scattered during fossilization.</p> <p>Denticles are significantly smaller than the teeth around the margin of the mouth 鈥 on the order of dozens to a couple hundred microns in length. They are actually true teeth, rather than just protrusions in the mouths of these tetrapods, says Reisz and his colleagues, <strong>Bryan Gee</strong> and <strong>Yara Haridy</strong>, both graduate students in paleontology.</p> <p>鈥淒enticles have all of the features of the large teeth that are found on the margin of the mouth,鈥 says Reisz. 鈥淚n examining tetrapod specimens dating back (approximately)&nbsp;289 million years, we discovered that the denticles display essentially all of the main features that are considered to define teeth, including enamel and dentine, pulp cavity and peridontia.鈥</p> <p><img alt class="media-image attr__typeof__foaf:Image img__fid__5986 img__view_mode__media_large attr__format__media_large" height="209" src="/sites/default/files/2017-09-14-denticles-resized_0.jpg" typeof="foaf:Image" width="625" loading="lazy"></p> <p><em><span style="color: rgb(21, 27, 38); font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">A look at the skull of a small amphibamid dissorophid called Passawioops, with the tiny palatal plates in place in the roof of the mouth, with two close-ups to the right.&nbsp;</span></em></p> <p>In reaching these conclusions, the researchers analyzed specimens unearthed from the fossil-rich Dolese Brothers Limestone Quarry near Richards Spur, Okla.
