An anthropologist whose work has explored how land development shapes communities. A leading mathematician also renowned for scholarship on Indian philosophy.</p> <p>These are a few of the University of Toronto community members who were recently recognized by the Order of Canada.</p> <p>The Governor General announced <a href="https://www.gg.ca/en/appointments-order-canada-december-2024">88 new appointments to the Order of Canada</a> on Dec 18, including three promotions. They include <strong>George Trusler</strong>, former head of cardiac surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children and a professor emeritus in the department of surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine;&nbsp;<strong>Tania Li</strong>, a <a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/complete-list-university-professors/">University Professor</a> in the department of anthropology in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science; and <strong>Vijaya Kumar Murty</strong>, a professor in the department of mathematics in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science.</p> <p>“Members of the Order of Canada are builders of hope for a better future,” Gov. Gen.&nbsp;<strong>Mary Simon</strong>&nbsp;said <a href="https://www.gg.ca/en/media/news/2024/appointments-order-canada-december">in a statement</a>. “Each in their own way, they broaden the realm of possibilities and inspire others to continue pushing its boundaries.&nbsp;Thank you for your perseverance, fearless leadership and visionary spirit, and welcome to the Order of Canada.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours. Co-founder of the Eye Foundation of Canada, he also serves as a medical director of Eye Van, providing care to remote northern Ontario communities. A former president of the Canadian Medical Association, Buchman has advocated for palliative care, MAID and equitable access to compassionate care. He completed his residency in family medicine at 鶹Ƶ.</p> <div class="align-left"> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/scale_image_150_width_/public/2024-12/10289_OFCPortraits_20221124-David-Chitayat-crop.jpg?itok=SI0qIS_S" width="150" height="150" alt="David Chitayat" class="image-style-scale-image-150-width-"> </div> </div> <p><strong>David Chitayat</strong>, head of the prenatal diagnosis and medical genetics program at Mount Sinai Hospital, physician at SickKids and professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s departments of paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, laboratory medicine and pathobiology, and molecular genetics, was named a Member of the Order for his globally acclaimed work identifying genes associated with fetal abnormalities and postnatal newborns.</p> <p><strong>Stacy Churchill</strong>, a professor emeritus in the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, was named a Member of the Order for his expertise in education and linguistic rights for Francophone minorities. Churchill has advised the federal and provincial government on language policy and consulted on UNICEF and UNESCO education missions.</p> <p><strong>Dafna Gladman</strong>, a senior scientist at the Toronto Western Research Institute and a professor in the Institute of Medical Science in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for her contributions to the psoriatic arthritis field. Her research advanced the understanding of the chronic disease, and her advocacy has improved the treatment and care. The former head of the faculty’s graduate dental anaesthesia speciality program, Haas has influenced dental training and practices worldwide. A former director of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences at 鶹Ƶ, he has advanced knowledge in various mathematical fields, including analytic number theory. A senior clinician scientist in the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, he has revolutionized in-utero treatment and care, improving outcomes for mothers and their unborn children globally.&nbsp;</p> <div class="align-left"> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/scale_image_150_width_/public/2024-12/UofT84429_Valerie-Tarasuk_11-5-2019_by-Jim-Oldfield-crop.jpg?itok=MiODT-uG" width="150" height="150" alt="Valarie Tarasuk" class="image-style-scale-image-150-width-"> </div> </div> <p><strong>Valerie Sue Tarasuk</strong>, a professor emerita in the department of nutritional sciences in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine with a cross-appointment to the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, was named a Member of the Order for her expertise on food insecurity in Canada. Tarasuk has worked to reduce food insecurity with policy intervention through PROOF, an interdisciplinary research program. She earned her master of science and PhD at 鶹Ƶ.&nbsp;&nbsp;  &nbsp;</p> <p><strong>George Trusler</strong>, former head of cardiac surgery at SickKids and a professor emeritus in the department of surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of innovations in pediatric and cardiac surgery. His innovations have saved thousands of lives, including his &nbsp;groundbreaking invention to preserve the aortic valve and his design of an algorithm to control excess blood flow to the lungs of infants suffering heart failure.</p> <h3>鶹Ƶ and Friends</h3> <p><strong>J. Anthony Boeckh</strong>, who earned a bachelor of commerce in 1960 as a member of Trinity College, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of contributions to youth mental health through the Graham Boeckh Foundation, which he founded in honour of his late son. Boeckh has worked with leading global experts to establish strategies to transform Canada’s mental health care system. He is also a founding trustee of the Fraser Institute.</p> <p><strong>Carol Cowan-Levine</strong>, who earned her master’s in social work from 鶹Ƶ, was recognized with the Order of Canada for her leadership role in social work&nbsp;and the establishment of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.&nbsp;Her extensive volunteer work has impacted government, health care institutions and the non-profit sector in Ontario.</p> <p><strong>Stan Douglas</strong>, a renowned multimedia artist, was named an Officer of the Order for his body of work that explores history, technology and memory. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the 2022 Venice Biennale. His donated piece, Maritime Workers Hall, Vancouver, hangs in the halls of 鶹Ƶ’s Hart House as part of the Hart House Permanent Collection.</p> <p><strong>Donald Dippo</strong>, who earned a master of education and PhD from 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for increasing educational access for children and teachers in Canada and internationally. He co-founded the Borderless Higher Education for Refugees program, based in the Dadaab refugee camps of Kenya.</p> <p><strong>R. Douglas Elliott</strong> was named a Member of the Order for his advancement and protection of 2SLGBTQI+ rights under Canadian law. An alumnus of the Faculty of Law, he has been involved in landmark constitutional cases and class actions, notably serving as lead counsel in the LGBT Purge class action.</p> <p><strong>Aura Kagan</strong>, a speech language pathologist who earned a PhD from 鶹Ƶ, was named an Officer of the Order for contributions that profoundly shaped care for people living with aphasia&nbsp;–&nbsp;a disorder that disrupts the ability to speak, understand, read, and write&nbsp;– including groundbreaking methods to help individuals communicate more effectively.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Jeffrey J. McDonnell</strong>, who earned a bachelor of science from 鶹Ƶ Scarborough in 1984, was named an Officer of the Order for his seminal scientific impact on the field of hydrology. A professor at the University of Saskatchewan, he has transformed the understanding of streamflow generation and the water cycle.</p> <p><strong>Maureen Jennings</strong>, who earned a master’s degree at 鶹Ƶ in 1967, was named a Member of the Order for her achievements as an historical crime author, most notably for the creation of the <em>Detective Murdoch</em> series – which inspired the long-running TV show <em>Murdoch Mysteries</em> – and for her contributions to Canadian history regarding women's roles during the Second World War.</p> <p><strong>Karen Levine</strong>, who earned a bachelor of arts as a member of University College in 1977, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her decades-long career at CBC Radio. She is also honoured for her book <em>Hana’s Suitcase</em>, which has educated young readers worldwide about the Holocaust.</p> <p><strong>Sam Shemie</strong>, who completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for shaping new ethical standards surrounding organ donation, creating new protocols for hospital culture and mentoring hundreds of clinical care physicians in Canada and abroad. He is medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit at Montreal Children's Hospital.</p> <p><strong>Walter Schneider</strong>, who earned a degree in literary arts from 鶹Ƶ Mississauga, was named a Member of the Order for contributions to business, entrepreneurship and philanthropy. And a public health expert who led the rollout of Canada’s first colon cancer screening program.</p> <p>These are a few members of the University of Toronto community who were recently honoured with appointments or promotions within the Order of Canada.</p> <p>The Governor General <a href="http://www.gg.ca/en/media/news/2024/order-canada-june">recently announced 83 new appointments</a> to the Order of Canada, including two promotions within the Order.</p> <p>They include <strong>Doug Stephan</strong>, a<a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/"> University Professor</a>&nbsp;of chemistry in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science; <strong>Lee Errett</strong>, a professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s department of surgery, and&nbsp;<strong>Linda Rabeneck</strong>, a health executive and&nbsp;professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.</p> <p>Established in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest honours, recognizing extraordinary contributions across all sectors of society.</p> <p>“The Order of Canada recognizes individuals who have made positive and lasting impacts on communities here in Canada or who have brought honour to our country abroad,” Gov. Gen. <strong>Mary Simon</strong> said in a statement.</p> <p>Here is a list of 鶹Ƶ faculty, alumni and supporters who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round of honourees.</p> <hr> <h4>Current and former faculty</h4> <p><strong>Edward Cole</strong>, a staff nephrologist at Toronto General Hospital and professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s department of medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his dedication to advancing and delivering care to people living with kidney disease, his instrumental role in establishing a globally impactful kidney-paired donation program and his leadership as former physician-in-chief at the University Health Network.</p> <p><strong>Lee Errett</strong>, a&nbsp;professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s department of surgery, was appointed a Member of the Order for his transformative leadership in cardiac research and care, including his role in establishing St. Michael’s Hospital as a world-class centre for cardiac surgery, his dedication to educating future medical leaders and providing care in underserved areas worldwide.</p> <p><strong>Franklyn Griffiths</strong>, a professor emeritus and George Ignatieff Chair Emeritus of Peace and Conflict Studies in the department of political science in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, was appointed a Member of the Order for his scholarship on Russian affairs which has advanced the Western world’s understanding of Soviet politics. An expert in Arctic international relations, Griffiths helped create the Arctic Council and pushed for Indigenous voices to play a central role in the council’s workings.</p> <p><strong>Beverley Johnston</strong>, an internationally renowned percussionist who is an adjunct professor in the Faculty of Music, was appointed an Officer of the Order for her work developing and promoting Canadian music to audiences around the world. Working in a male-dominated field, Johnston’s unconventional performances combine classical transcriptions, contemporary music and an element of theatre.</p> <p><strong>Daphne Maurer</strong>, a professor emeritus of psychology, neuroscience and behaviour at McMaster University who holds a status appointment at 鶹Ƶ’s Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, was appointed an Officer of the Order for her research on visual and cognitive development in early childhood.</p> <p><strong>Linda Rabeneck</strong>, a gastroenterologist, health executive and&nbsp;professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, was named a Member of the Order for her leadership in colorectal cancer screening and prevention. Formerly the director of the Division of Gastroenterology at 鶹Ƶ, she led the rollout of ColonCancerCheck, Canada’s first province-wide screening program.</p> <p><strong>Stephen Randall</strong>, who earned his master's degree and doctorate at 鶹Ƶ and taught at the university from 1971 to 1974, was named a Member of the Order for his academic contributions and advisory role in international relations. A professor emeritus at the University of Calgary, Randall’s expertise in myriad issues affecting the United States and Latin America, notably Colombia, has informed Canada’s foreign policy.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Bibudhendra Sarkar</strong>, senior scientist emeritus at the Research Institute of the Hospital for Sick Children and professor emeritus at 鶹Ƶ’s department of biochemistry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his achievements in advancing medical research in Canada and abroad. He discovered a novel treatment for patients with Menkes disease, a rare genetic condition, and led international efforts in South and Southeast Asia to address public health crises from contaminated groundwater.</p> <p><strong>Jonathan Scott Rose</strong>, a professor in the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering, was named a Member of the Order for his pioneering work in architecture and software used in field-programmable gate arrays. Rose served as the chair of the department from 2004 to 2009 and received his PhD degree in electrical engineering from 鶹Ƶ in 1986.</p> <p><strong>Doug Stephan</strong>, a <a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/">University Professor</a> in the department of chemistry in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition his world-leading research in inorganic and organometallic chemistry. His many achievements include discovering – and commercializing – a new class of catalysts that is now used in one of the largest chemical manufacturing facilities in the world. He also achieved global renown for founding the field of “Frustrated Lewis Pair” chemistry.</p> <h4>鶹Ƶ and friends</h4> <p>Sleight-of-hand artist <strong>David Ben</strong>, who graduated from University College in 1983, was named a Member of the Order for his four decades of dedication to the exploration, development and preservation of magic, including penning several books on the subject and co-founding the Magicana organization.</p> <p><strong>William Fox</strong>, a research fellow and adjunct professor at Trent University who earned his honours bachelor of arts and master of arts in archeology at 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for his distinguished contributions to Canadian archeology, his leadership in the Ontario Archaeological Society, and his steadfast advocacy for the involvement of Indigenous communities in preserving their material heritage.</p> <p><strong>Martha Friendly</strong>, who founded the Childcare Resource and Research Unit at 鶹Ƶ’s Centre for Urban and Community Studies in the early 1980s, was appointed an Officer of the Order for her work with the now-independent non-profit and her advocacy for accessible, publicly funded early childhood education and care, and women’s equality.</p> <p><strong>Rosemary Ganley</strong>, a writer, activist, teacher and an alumna of St. Michael’s College, was named a Member of the Order for her lifelong advocacy for human rights, gender equity, and social justice, including co-founding Jamaican Self Help, an organization of Canadians working to support the development of healthy Jamaican communities.</p> <p><strong>Arnie Gelbart</strong>, a member of the Chancellors’ Circle of Benefactors, was named a Member of the Order for his decades-long leadership in independent film and television in his role as founder, executive producer and CEO of Galafilm Productions Inc.</p> <p><strong>Judy Kent</strong> was named a Member of the Order for championing sport as a catalyst for social change, her advocacy for gender equality and inclusion and her leadership in international support. Among her achievements: She was the first woman to serve as both president of Commonwealth Sport Canada and Canada’s chef de mission for the Commonwealth Games, and her paper on sport for international development laid the foundation for the SportWORKS program.</p> <p><strong>James David Meekison</strong>, with a 45-year career spanning investment banking, cable television and private equity, was named a Member of the Order for his extensive philanthropy. The Jim Meekison and Carolyn Keystone Foundation supported 鶹Ƶ’s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy’s efforts to launch the Discovery Pharmacy on the St. George campus.</p> <p><strong>Michael Perley</strong>, a 鶹Ƶ alumnus who completed a master’s degree in French language and literature, was named a Member of the Order for his lifelong dedication to tackling environmental and health challenges. A computer scientist whose work helped enable the development and adoption of touchscreen interfaces.</p> <p>These are just a few of the University of Toronto community members who were recently recognized by appointments to – or promotions within – the Order of Canada.</p> <p>The Governor General announced 78 new appointments to the Order of Canada on Dec. 28 (including three promotions). They include <strong>Anne Bassett</strong>, a senior clinician-scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), a senior scientist at University Health Network (UHN) and a professor in the department of psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine; <strong>Gary Kulesha</strong>, an associate professor, teaching stream, in the Faculty of Music; and&nbsp;<strong>Bill Buxton</strong>, an adjunct professor of computer science in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science.</p> <p>“I greatly value the opportunity to celebrate individuals whose perseverance, ingenuity and community spirit have benefited Canadians throughout the country,” Gov. She completed post-graduated medical training at 鶹Ƶ.</p> <p><strong>Ian Burton</strong>, a professor emeritus in the department of geography (now geography and planning) and School of the Environment in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, was named an Officer of the Order for his scholarship and policy work on climate change adaptation.</p> <p><strong>Bill Buxton</strong>, a current adjunct professor and former associate professor in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, was appointed an Officer of the Order for his research and innovations shaping the way humans interact with technology. A pianist, Kulesha’s music has been commissioned, performed and recorded by musicians and ensembles around the world.</p> <p><strong>Francine Lemire</strong>, an adjunct assistant professor in the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her accomplishments as a Paralympic medallist in cross-country skiing and her leadership in family medicine. Lemire, who won two gold medals at the 1988 Winter Paralympics, is the former executive director and CEO of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.</p> <p><strong>Bruce G. Pollock</strong>, a senior scientist, vice-president of research and director of the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute at CAMH and a professor of psychiatry and pharmacology and toxicology at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his pioneering contributions to geriatric psychopharmacology as a researcher, builder and educator. A 鶹Ƶ alumnus, Pollock is the inaugural Peter and Shelagh Godsoe Chair in Late-Life Mental Health at 鶹Ƶ and CAMH.</p> <p><strong>Arun Ravindran</strong>, a senior scientist in the General Adult Psychiatry and Health Systems Division at CAMH and a professor in the department of psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine cross-appointed to the department of psychology and the Institute of Medical Sciences, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to mental health research and clinical care, notably in the areas of mood disorders and global mental health.</p> <h3>鶹Ƶ and friends</h3> <p><strong>Sara Joy Angel</strong>, who earned her PhD in art history at 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for elevating Canada’s visual history and culture as a journalist and founder of the Art Canada Institute.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Bronwyn D.A. Drainie</strong>, who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for her long-standing contributions to Canadian arts and culture, notably as a prominent radio host and editor-in-chief of the <em>Literary Review of Canada</em>.</p> <p><strong>Wenona Giles</strong>, who earned her master’s degree and PhD in anthropology at 鶹Ƶ, was named an Officer of the Order for her contributions to refugee and migration studies and work to provide people in refugee camps with access to higher education. A professor emerita at York University, Giles helped launch the Borderless Higher Education for Refugees project, which has provided access to tuition-free university degree programs to people living in refugee camps in Kenya.</p> <p><strong>Tennys J.M. Hanson</strong>, who earned a bachelor’s degree from 鶹Ƶ Mississauga and went on to serve as 鶹Ƶ Mississauga’s executive director of campus development and public affairs, was named a Member of the Order for contributions to health care and education in Canada through her transformative leadership in the fundraising sector. Hanson served 23 years at the helm of the UHN Foundation (previously known as the Toronto General &amp; Western Hospital Foundation).</p> <p><strong>Victor Peter Hetmanczuk</strong>, who earned two bachelor’s degrees from 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for his enduring dedication and leadership in the Ukrainian-Canadian community and beyond. Hetmanczuk’s many contributions include organizing and financing volunteer missions to provide medical assistance to soldiers wounded during the 2014 Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Lillie Johnson</strong>, who earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for her impact in improving public health within the Black community. Johnson was the first Black director of public health in Ontario and is known for the founding of the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario.</p> <p><strong>Susan Margaret Macpherson</strong>, who earned a bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her&nbsp;lifetime devotion to dance as an artist, educator, director, researcher and mentor. Macpherson was an artistic associate at the Dance Arts Institute (formerly the School of Toronto Dance Theatre) for nearly 25 years and served as a faculty member at the institute.</p> <p><strong>Medhat Sabet Mahdy</strong>, who earned a bachelor’s degree&nbsp;from 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for his unwavering dedication to building community and improving the quality of life for all in the Greater Toronto Area. Mahdy is former president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Toronto and former president of YMCA Ontario.</p> <p><strong>Noella Maria Milne</strong>, who graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1986, was named a Member of the Order for her volunteer leadership and commitment to community service, particularly to initiatives supporting education, women and youth.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Peter Robb Pearson</strong>, who studied political science at 鶹Ƶ, was appointed an Officer of the Order for his groundbreaking contributions as a filmmaker and for his tireless advocacy of Canadian film and television. The winner of 19 Canadian Film Awards, Pearson is credited with directing some of Canada’s most influential films including <em>Paperback Hero</em> and <em>The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar</em>.</p> <p><strong>André Picard</strong>, health journalist and recipient of an honorary degree from 鶹Ƶ in 2017, was named a Member of the Order for his dedication to advancing public health understanding and practices in Canada as a leading health journalist. A staff writer at the <em>Globe and Mail</em> since 1987, Picard is also a bestselling author.</p> <p><strong>Joel Quarrington</strong>,&nbsp;who earned an artist’s degree from 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Music, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions as a world-leading double bass player and respected educator. The Juno Award-winning musician, who teaches at the University of Ottawa, is a soloist and has served as Principal Double Bass of the London Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company and Toronto Symphony Orchestra.</p> <p><strong>Zainub Verjee</strong>, a senior fellow at Massey College, was named a Member of the Order for advancing representation and equitable policy legislation within Canada’s arts and culture sectors as a leading artist, administrator and critic.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Flavio Volpe</strong>, who earned a bachelor’s&nbsp;degree from 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of his work advancing Canada’s automotive and technology industries on an international scale as a leading policy expert in national trade and industry competition. A composer who draws from Anishinaabe teachings and classical musical training to hone her own contemporary sound.&nbsp;</p> <p>These are some of the members of the University of Toronto community recently recognized with the Order of Canada.</p> <p>The Governor General announced 85 appointments to the Order of Canada on June 30, including one promotion within the Order. <strong>Alan Bernstein</strong>, one of Canada’s foremost scientific leaders, Toronto Raptors President <strong>Masai Ujiri</strong> and internationally renowned composer <strong>Barbara Assiginaak</strong> are among the 鶹Ƶ luminaries who appear on the list.</p> <p>“Today, we recognize individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to our society,” Gov. Gen Mary Simon <a href="https://www.gg.ca/en/media/news/2023/new-appointments-order-canada-and-promotions-within-order">said in a statement</a>. “A group of individuals who, through dedication and <em>ajuinnata</em> – perseverance – make our communities and our country better every day.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes individuals who have made a difference in their communities with their outstanding achievements and service to the country.&nbsp;</p> <p>Here is a list of 鶹Ƶ faculty, alumni, supporters and friends who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round:&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Barbara Assiginaak</strong>, an alumna of the Faculty of Music, was named a Member of the Order for “her diverse contributions to contemporary music as a classically trained musician rooted in Anishinaabe teachings.”&nbsp;The Odawa First Nation composer and musician has had commissions and performed across Canada and around the world.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2023-07/D75_2022-bernstein-crop.jpg" width="300" height="450" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Alan Bernstein (photo by Lisa Sakulensky)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p><strong>Alan Bernstein</strong>, an alumnus and <a href="https://moleculargenetics.utoronto.ca/faculty/alan-bernstein">professor emeritus in the department of molecular genetics</a> at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was promoted to Companion of the Order for his leadership in Canadian health research and science policy and support for future generations of researchers.</p> <p>Bernstein is credited with revitalizing Canadian health research, promoting interdisciplinary research and championing women and younger scientists as the inaugural president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the president and CEO of CIFAR (the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research), among other roles in research administration.&nbsp;</p> <p>Alumnus <strong>Irwin Elman</strong>, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from 鶹Ƶ’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), has been named an Officer of the Order for his “advocacy of children and youth, and for his transformational listening tours that give voice to society’s most vulnerable.” An educator, counsellor, youth worker and policy developer, he has influenced fundamental shifts in the child welfare system.&nbsp;</p> <p>Physician <strong>Ronald Gold</strong> was named a Member of the Order for his work to eradicate meningitis globally and his mentorship of the next generation of pediatric specialists. From 1979 to 1992, Gold served as head of the division of infectious disease at the Hospital for Sick Children and professor of pediatrics at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2023-07/DSC04812-touched-up-aspect-ratio-3_4-crop.jpg" width="300" height="400" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Jayanne English (photo by&nbsp;Martin Dunkley-Smith)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p><strong>Jayanne English</strong>, an alumna of 鶹Ƶ’s Woodsworth College, was named a Member of the Order for her “innovative work at the crossroads of science and art, and for making astronomy accessible to all.” English, who has worked with NASA on coordinating their Hubble Heritage Project, currently teaches in the department of physics and astronomy at the University of Manitoba.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Joan Heather Garson</strong>, an alumna of the Faculty of Law, has been named a Member of the Order for her "leadership and governance of numerous non-profit organizations within Jewish communities across Canada and around the world.” Garson has held many leadership roles with local and international organizations.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Gary Daniel Goldberg</strong> was appointed a Member of the Order for “his decades of philanthropic leadership and contributions to scientific, health, environmental and educational initiatives.” An alumnus of University College, Goldberg <a href="https://governingcouncil.utoronto.ca/biography/mr-gary-d-goldberg">served on Governing Council</a> from 2013 to 2020, and received an Arbor Award in 1998 in recognition of his service to the university.&nbsp;</p> <p>Astronomer and astrophysicist <strong>Richard B. Larson</strong>, who earned his bachelor of science degree and master’s degree at 鶹Ƶ, was made a Member of the Order for his immense contributions to our understanding of star formation and galaxy evolution.&nbsp;</p> <p>Executive <strong>John Anthony Lederer</strong> – <a href="https://uofturology.ca/giving/donors/">a supporter of 鶹Ƶ’s Urology Global Health Fund</a>, which provides surgical expertise around the globe with the goal of improving health in underserved communities – was named a Member of the Order for his business leadership and philanthropy toward the community and health sectors.&nbsp;</p> <p>Physician <strong>Jean Marmoreo</strong>, an alumna and former lecturer at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her work as a family doctor specializing in women’s midlife health care and advocacy for medical assistance in dying.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Jeff Reading</strong> was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to Indigenous health research and “leadership in bringing Indigenous perspectives to scientific and health institutions.” An alumnus of 鶹Ƶ, Reading is a professor (status-only) at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and special advisor to the dean in the area of Indigenous health. He held a one-year term as <a href="https://www.dlsph.utoronto.ca/2015/11/24/professor-jeffrey-reading-concludes-interim-directorship-of-waakebiness-bryce-institute-for-indigenous-health/">inaugural interim director of Waakebiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous Health</a> in 2015.&nbsp;</p> <p>Physician <strong>Richard Keith Reznick</strong> was named an Officer of the Order for his “innovative contributions to the field of medical and surgical education.” The inaugural director of the Centre for Research in Education at University Health Network (The Wilson Centre) from 1997 to 2002 and former R.S. Mclaughlin professor and chair of 鶹Ƶ’s department of surgery, he later served as dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University, and president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Robert James Sharpe</strong>, a <a href="https://www.law.utoronto.ca/faculty-staff/distinguished-visitors/robert-j-sharpe">distinguished jurist in residence at the Faculty of Law</a>, was named an Officer of the Order for his contributions to Canadian jurisprudence both as a judge and a scholar. An <a href="https://www.law.utoronto.ca/news/uoft-law-honours-four-outstanding-members">active member of the 鶹Ƶ community</a>, alumnus and former professor, Sharpe served as dean of the Faculty of Law from 1990 to 1995, departing upon his appointment to Ontario Court of Justice (General Division), now the Superior Court of Justice. He spent more than two decades as a judge on the Court of Appeal for Ontario.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Ann Martin Shaw</strong>, who graduated from Trinity College in 1962, was named a Member of the Order for her lifelong dedication to figure skating as a participant, official, educator and mentor. Having competed in the World Championships as an athlete, Shaw has judged skating at all levels – including two Olympics – and played an influential role in applying the concepts of ice dance to shape the International Skating Union’s judging system. An executive producer of the <em>Degrassi</em> television series, Stohn also represented hundreds of Canadian artists over the years as an entertainment lawyer, including Blue Rodeo and Randy Bachman.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Masai Ujiri</strong>, a <a href="/news/masai-ujiri-architect-behind-toronto-raptors-2019-championship-receives-honorary-degree">2022 鶹Ƶ honorary degree recipient</a>, was named an Officer of the Order for his work on and off the basketball court. Gen Mary Simon announced a total of <a href="http://www.gg.ca/en/order-canada-appointees-december-2022">99 new appointments and promotions</a> on Dec. 29. They include: <b>Ron Deibert</b>, a professor in the department of political science in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science and the director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs &amp; Public Policy; <b>Eva Grunfeld, </b>physician and professor in the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine; and alumnus <b>Martin F. Congratulations.”</p> <p>Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes individuals who have made a difference in their communities with their outstanding achievements and service to the country.</p> <hr> <p>Here is a list of 鶹Ƶ faculty, alumni, supporters and friends who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round:</p> <h3>Current or former faculty</h3> <p><b><img alt src="/sites/default/files/RonDeibert_MunkSchool-crop.jpg" style="width: 175px; height: 175px; float: left; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;">Ronald James Deibert</b>, a professor in the department of political science in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science and the director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs &amp; Public Policy, was named an Officer for “his leadership and expertise in digital technology, security and human rights, and for his groundbreaking contributions to cyber security around the globe.” <a href="https://citizenlab.ca/category/research/">The work of Deibert and other Citizen Lab researchers</a> has helped expose the use of cyber espionage campaigns and malicious spyware targeting governments, citizens, activists, journalists and human rights defenders in countries such as Mexico, the U.K., El Salvador and Spain.</p> <p><b>Konrad Eisenbichler</b>, professor emeritus in the department of Italian studies in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, has been named a Member for “his acclaimed interdisciplinary study of sexuality, gender, history, religion and literature in the Italian Renaissance era.” A prize-winning scholar, Eisenbichler has authored, edited or translated more than 30 books and published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles in his field.</p> <p><img alt src="/sites/default/files/DSC_0072-crop.jpg" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; float: left; width: 175px; height: 175px;">Physician and professor <b>Eva Grunfeld</b> was named an Officer for “her influential research in cancer prevention and survivorship care, particularly within a primary care setting.” The Giblon professor and vice-chair (research) in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s department of family and community medicine with a cross appointment to the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at 鶹Ƶ’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Grunfeld is also director, knowledge translation research, in the health services research program at Cancer Care Ontario and the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research.</p> <p><b>Allan Edward Gross</b>, an orthopedic surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital and a professor of surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member for “his significant advancements in bone and cartilage transplantation as a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, educator and researcher.” Gross, who specializes in lower extremity reconstruction, earned his medical degree from 鶹Ƶ in 1962.</p> <p><b>Budd Lionel Hall</b> was named an Officer for “his contributions as a pioneer in the field of community-based research, and for his advancement of knowledge building and research capacity around the world.” A professor emeritus with the University of Victoria, Hall is a former professor and chair of adult education and community development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.</p> <p><b>Lori Haskell</b>, a former&nbsp;assistant professor in psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for “her groundbreaking and transformational research into the treatment of violence and trauma in vast sectors of society.” A nationally recognized expert in her field, Haskell is a clinical psychologist and a nationally recognized expert on trauma and abuse, and on trauma-informed approaches to mental health service delivery and legal responses.</p> <p><b><img alt src="/sites/default/files/Dr.-Laupacis-%28High-Res%29-%2818-of-22%29-crop.jpg" style="width: 175px; height: 175px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; float: left;">Andreas Laupacis</b>, a professor with the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer for “his ongoing contributions to the field of medicine and to a broad range of health care initiatives in Canada and around the world.” He is the former editor-in-chief and current deputy editor of the <i>Canadian Medical Association Journal</i>, and is a champion for enhancing the voice of patients within the health-care system.</p> <p><span style="background:white"><b>Richard D. Weisel, </b>a scientist emeritus at Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, University Health Network, and a professor in 鶹Ƶ’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member for&nbsp;“his leadership as an academic cardiovascular surgeon and for his scientific contributions to the field.” Weisel is renowned for his work in the fields of cell transplantation, myocardial protection and vascular biology.</span></p> <p>Ecologist <b>Barbara Lewis Zimmerman</b> was named an Officer for “her contributions to conservation science and for her advocacy of Indigenous Peoples’ rights to preserve the Amazon rainforest.” Formerly an adjunct professor of forestry at 鶹Ƶ, Zimmerman is a director with the Environmental Defense Fund.</p> <h3>鶹Ƶ and friends</h3> <p><b>Sheila Ruth Block, </b>who taught an intensive advocacy course at 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Law and is on the advisory board for the Program on Ethics, Business and the Law at 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member for “her trailblazing contributions to law in Canada and aboard, and for her wide-ranging advocacy.”</p> <p><b>Angela Ella Cooper Brathwaite</b>, who earned a PhD from 鶹Ƶ’s Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, has been named a Member for “her extensive contributions to the field of nursing through her leadership, public policy advocacy, education and research.” She has held leadership positions in primary care, acute care and public health settings and taught nursing students at Ontario Technology University and 鶹Ƶ.</p> <p><b>Allen Charles Edward Eaves</b>, who earned a PhD in medical biophysics at 鶹Ƶ, was named an Officer of the Order, recognized for “his leading business acumen in the biotechnology industry and for his advancement of cutting-edge stem cell and leukemia research.” Eaves is the president and CEO of Vancouver-based STEMCELL Technologies and is a professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia.</p> <p>Award-winning stage and screen actor <b>Victor Jay Garber</b> was named an Officer “for his outstanding work in film, television and theatre.” While not a graduate of 鶹Ƶ, Garber has spoken of working on his craft as a teenager at Hart House, <a href="https://www.thestar.com/entertainment/stage/2010/01/16/victor_garber_jesus_got_the_ball_rolling.html">telling the <i>Toronto Star</i> in 2010</a> that, at 16, "I was accepted at a six-week summer theatre training program <a href="https://harthouse.ca/theatre/about-us">at Hart House at the University of Toronto</a> with Robert Gill as the teacher. I was the youngest one there."</p> <p><b>Paula Beth Gordon</b>, an alumna of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer “for advancing ultrasound imaging and technology in the early detection of breast cancer, as a prominent radiologist and researcher.” Gordon is a clinical professor in the department of radiology at the University of British Columbia.</p> <p><b>Michael Douglas Hill</b> was named an Officer for “his major contributions to the advancement of acute stroke care and treatment at the provincial, national and international levels.” A professor at the University of Calgary, Hill completed his neurology residency at 鶹Ƶ.&nbsp;</p> <p><b>Martin F. Katz</b>, a special lecturer in intellectual property law at 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member for “his contributions to the Canadian film, television and media industries, as a producer and leading innovator.” Katz, who graduated from 鶹Ƶ with a law degree, is the <a href="https://prosperopictures.com/about/">founder and president of Prospero Pictures</a><span class="MsoHyperlink" style="text-decoration-line:underline">,</span> and his work has been nominated for Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards.</p> <p><b>Warren Charles Seymour Kimel</b>, whose donation to the Temerty Faculty of Medicine supported the creation of the Kimel Family International Fellowship Training Program in Gynaecologic Oncology &amp; Maternal Fetal Medicine, was named a Member for “his enduring leadership and philanthropic contributions in support of vulnerable members of Canadian society.” &nbsp;</p> <p><b>Harry S. LaForme, </b><a href="/news/harry-laforme-canada-s-first-indigenous-appellate-judge-receives-honorary-degree">who received an honorary degree from 鶹Ƶ</a> in 2021<b>,</b> was named an Officer “for advancing national Indigenous rights as a groundbreaking jurist, and for championing underserved communities in Canada.” The country’s first Indigenous appellate judge, LaForme helped reframe the discussion about Indigenous land rights and self-government in Canada. He also wrote a decision that led to same-sex marriage becoming legal in Ontario.</p> <p>Honorary degree recipient <b>Pierre Lassonde</b> was promoted within the order to the rank of Officer. <a href="https://lassondeinstitute.utoronto.ca/pierre-lassonde-2/">Lassonde – who has been a supporter of the university through his leadership and donations for decades, including a transformative gift that established the Lassonde Institute of Mining</a> in the Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering – was recognized “for his long-standing contributions to the gold industry and for his transformative philanthropy, notably in support of the arts and education.”</p> <p><b>Gerald James Lozinski</b> and <b>Joan Mary Lozinski</b>, who are supporters of the Faculty of Music, were named Officers for “their long-standing support for the arts in Canada, with a special focus on dance excellence.”</p> <p><span style="background:white"><b>Jacqueline Mary Elizabeth Maxwell</b>, who has been a guest drama lecturer at 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member&nbsp;“for her contributions to Canadian theatre as an artistic director, director, dramaturge and teacher, and for her advocacy of women in the field.”</span></p> <p><b>Ivar Mendez</b><b> </b>was named an Officer for “his pioneering work in the use of remote telemedicine and robotics to revolutionize the delivery of health and patient care in Canada and worldwide.” Mendez, who completed his undergraduate degree at 鶹Ƶ, is the Fred H. They are <b>Peter Howard Russell</b>, a professor emeritus of political science and former principal of Innis College, and <b>Frank Hayden</b>, an honorary degree recipient and former 鶹Ƶ researcher who led the <a href="https://www.specialolympics.ca/learn/about-special-olympics-canada/our-history">Special Olympics</a> movement.</p> <p>Other prominent 鶹Ƶ community members named to the Order in the most recent cohort include: <b>Aled Edwards</b>, a professor of medical of biophysics who is a global leader in open science research; <b>Germaine Warkentin, </b>a visionary scholar and professor emeritus of English; <b>Zane Cohen</b>, a professor of surgery who broke new ground in the field of colorectal surgery; and <b>Ajay Agrawal</b>, a professor of entrepreneurship who founded the Creative Destruction Lab.</p> <p>“Those being appointed today come from a variety of sectors, have achieved national and international success, and have shown ingenuity, innovation and generosity,” Gov. Gen. Mary Simon said in a statement that accompanied the 89 new appointments and promotions.</p> <p>“What’s more, they have made a difference in their communities and for Canada with their outstanding dedication and commitment.”</p> <p>Created in 1967, the Order recognizes individuals for their outstanding achievements, dedication and service to the country.</p> <p>Here is a list of 鶹Ƶ faculty, alumni, supporters and friends who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round.</p> <hr> <h3>Current and former faculty</h3> <p><b>Ajay Agrawal</b>, a professor of entrepreneurship at 鶹Ƶ’s Rotman School of Management, was named a Member of the Order for “his visionary leadership as an educator and entrepreneur, and for his mentorship of students and aspiring business owners.” He’s the founder and academic director of the Creative Destruction Lab, a not-for-profit program for early-stage, science-based companies. Agrawal is known for his<b> </b>research on the economics of artificial intelligence, science policy, entrepreneurial finance and geography of innovation.</p> <p><b>Zane Cohen</b>, a professor of surgery at 鶹Ƶ’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his “innovative surgical methods in the field of colorectal surgery and for his leadership in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.” A 鶹Ƶ alumnus, he graduated from what is now the Temerty Faculty of Medicine in 1969 and completed his general surgical residency in the Gallie Program at the university. He rose through the ranks at 鶹Ƶ and its partner hospitals, developing innovative surgical techniques that have helped thousands of patients afflicted with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and colorectal cancer.</p> <p><b>Aled Edwards</b>, a professor in medical biophysics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for “advancing Canada’s global reputation as a leader in open science research by founding the groundbreaking Structural Genomics Consortium.” The consortium is a research organization that’s focused on sharing scientific knowledge in order to accelerate the development of new life-saving drugs and other treatments. As its chief executive, Edwards leads the consortium’s six laboratories around the world.</p> <p><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/order-group_0.jpg" alt></p> <p><em>Ajay Agrawal (photo by Yana Kaz), Zane Cohen&nbsp;(Carlos Osorio/Toronto Star via Getty Images), Aled Edwards (photo courtesy of Temerty Faculty of Medicine),&nbsp;Germaine Warkentin (photo courtesy of Faculty of Arts &amp; Science)</em></p> <p><b>Gary Levy</b>, a professor emeritus in the department of medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his “leadership and pioneering innovations as the former medical director of the Multi-Organ Transplant Program at Toronto General Hospital.” A 鶹Ƶ alumnus, Levy has made outstanding contributions to the study of liver disease, and is currently seeking a way to achieve immunological tolerance that could allow patients who have undergone solid organ transplant to discontinue their long-term immunosuppression therapy.<b>&nbsp;</b></p> <p><strong>Donna Ouchterlony</strong>, a retired faculty member in the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her “pioneering approaches and decades-long commitment to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of acquired brain injuries.” A&nbsp;director of the Head Injury Clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital,&nbsp;Ouchterlony’s research ranged from the use of the internet to treat depression in head injury to treating head injury in people without housing.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p><b>Peter Howard Russell, </b>a <a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/">University Professor</a> Emeritus in political science in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, was promoted to Companion for his “extensive and enduring contributions to Canadian society as an internationally renowned political scientist, scholar and educator.” A&nbsp;Trinity College alumnus and 鶹Ƶ honorary degree recipient, Russell was the principal of Innis College in the 1970s, authored several books and is best known for his contribution to research into the administration of justice in the country.</p> <p><b>Germaine Warkentin, </b>a professor emeritus of English, has been named a Member of the Order for her “lifelong devotion and contributions, as a visionary scholar and educator, to the global history of the printed book.” A 鶹Ƶ alumna, Warkentin’s writing and editing interests are in Renaissance studies, early Canadian exploration texts, modern Canadian poetry and criticism, and book history.</p> <h3>鶹Ƶ and friends</h3> <p><b>R. Jamie Anderson</b>, senior advisor at RBC Capital Markets and director of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Foundation Board, was named a Member of the Order for his “leadership in Canada’s investment banking sector, and for his far-reaching volunteer service in youth education and mental health.” A 鶹Ƶ alumnus, he holds a bachelor of commerce degree. <b>&nbsp;</b></p> <p><b>Naomi Sara Azrieli,</b> chair and CEO of the Azrieli Foundation, was named Officer of the Order for her “leadership in business and for contributing to health care, science, education and the community through her family’s foundation.” The Azrieli Foundation – founded in 1989 – has made significant contributions to supporting brain health research, including the creation of the Azrieli Centre for Neuro-Radiochemistry at CAMH.</p> <p><b>William Foster Clark</b>, a professor of medicine at Western University, has been named a Member of the Order for his “extensive research in the field of nephrology and for his leadership following the contamination of the municipal water supply in Walkerton, Ontario, in 2000.” Clark did his internship in internal medicine and nephrology at 鶹Ƶ in the 1970s.</p> <p><b>Madeleine Féquière</b>, the corporate credit chief for Domtar’s worldwide operations, has been named a Member of the Order for her “distinguished career in the field of corporate credit risk management and for her mentoring of diverse talent in management.” In 2017, she completed the ICD-Rotman directors education program at 鶹Ƶ.</p> <p><b>Frank Hayden, </b>who received an honorary degree from 鶹Ƶ in 1999, was promoted to Companion of the Order for “promoting and advocating the transformative effect of sport on the mental, physical and social well-being of people with intellectual disabilities.” He is a pioneer of the Special Olympics movement due to his groundbreaking research – some of which began at 鶹Ƶ.</p> <p><b>G. Ross Peters</b>, a renowned engineer, has been named a Member of the Order for his “multiple contributions to engineering, notably in education and regulation, that have advanced the profession at the provincial, national and international levels.” He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from 鶹Ƶ.</p> <p><b>Sandra Pitblado, </b>director of the Stratford Festival Endowment Foundation,<b> </b>has been named a Member of the Order for “supporting Canada’s performing arts through her passionate volunteerism, beloved mentorship and generous philanthropy.”<b>&nbsp;</b>A 鶹Ƶ alumna, Pitblado&nbsp;and her husband have been longtime supporters of the university.</p> <p><b>Guy Jacques Pratte</b>, a partner at the Canadian law firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, has been named a Member of the Order for his “contributions as a lawyer, notably to the pro bono movement, and for his volunteer commitments to the performing arts.” He graduated from 鶹Ƶ with a law degree and a master of arts in philosophy. He has been a guest lecturer and an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law.</p> <p><b>Sister Bernadette Mary O’Reilly</b> has been named a Member of the Order for her “leadership of Rossbrook House and for her commitment to youth in Winnipeg through education, social leadership and reconciliation initiatives.” She holds two degrees from from St. Michael’s College.</p> <p><b>Joel Reitman</b>, president of global investment firm Jillcy Capital Corp., has been named a Member of the Order for his “advocacy of Jewish identity in Canada, and for his generous philanthropy and support for leading neurological institutes.” He is a member of the steering committee at 鶹Ƶ’s Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases.&nbsp;</p> <p><b>Martin T. Schechter, </b>epidemiologist and professor at the University of British Columbia, was named a Member of the Order for his “groundbreaking research in HIV/AIDS treatment protocols and for his leadership in the development of numerous leading-edge health institutes.” He received a master of public health in epidemiology from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.</p> <p><b>Jan Zwicky, </b>philosopher, poet and musician, has been named a Member of the Order for her “contributions to Canadian poetry and philosophy, and for her work as an educator and editor.” A 鶹Ƶ&nbsp;alumna, Zwicky&nbsp;holds two degrees in philosophy from the university.</p> <p><em>Did we miss anybody? Professor <b>Gregory Marchildon</b>, an expert in health-care policy; Professor <strong>Sharon Straus</strong>, who heads the knowledge translation program at St. Michael’s Hospital; and<strong> </strong>Professor<strong> </strong>Emerita<strong> </strong><b>Helene Polatajko</b>, an internationally respected occupational therapy scholar.</p> <p>Also named to the Order is <a href="/news/uoftgrad17-murray-sinclair-chair-canada-s-truth-and-reconciliation-commission-receives-honorary">鶹Ƶ honorary degree recipient</a> <b>Murray Sinclair</b>, a former judge, senator&nbsp;and chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission whose work informed 鶹Ƶ’s own Truth and Reconciliation steering committee.</p> <p>Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours. It recognizes people whose service, innovations and compassion shape Canadian society, foster imagination and unite people and communities.</p> <p>A total of 135 appointments and promotions <a href="https://www.gg.ca/en/activities/2021/governor-general-announces-135-new-appointments-order-canada">were announced</a> on Dec. 29 by Gov. Gen. A world-renowned expert in his field, he addresses how engineers can prevent the collapse of buildings by using new approaches in design to better assess and repair structures.</p> <p><strong>Eleanor N. Fish</strong>, a professor in the department of immunology in the<strong> </strong><span style="background:white">Temerty Faculty of Medicine and</span> a senior scientist at University Health Network’s Toronto General Research Institute, was named a Member of the Order for her groundbreaking studies on the use of interferon-alpha in the treatment of disease. A 鶹Ƶ alumna, Fish is an expert in several infectious diseases including SARS, H1N1 and Ebola.</p> <div class="image-with-caption right"> <div><img alt src="/sites/default/files/2023-04/Greg%20Mcarchildon-crop.jpeg" style="width: 150px; height: 225px;"><em><span style="font-size:12px;">Gregory Marchildon</span></em></div> </div> <p><b>Gregory Marchildon</b>, a professor at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME) in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and an Ontario Research Chair in Health Policy and System Design, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to health-care policy in Canada and mentorship of the next generation of policy-oriented researchers.</p> <p><b>Helene Polatajko</b>, a professor emerita in the department of occupational science and occupational therapy in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for her work in significantly advancing the understanding of developmental co-ordination disorder in children. Polatajko, who earned her master’s degree and PhD from 鶹Ƶ’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) is an internationally recognized scholar of occupational therapy.</p> <div class="image-with-caption left"> <div><img alt src="/sites/default/files/2023-04/Sharon%20Straus-crop.jpeg" style="width: 150px; height: 225px;"><em><span style="font-size:12px;">Sharon Straus</span></em></div> </div> <p><strong>Sharon Straus</strong>, a professor in the department of medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine with a cross appointment at IHPME who is director of the knowledge translation program and physician-in-chief at St. Michael’s Hospital, was named a Member of the Order for her academic contributions in the field of knowledge translation and mentorship in epidemiology. The classical guitarist and five-time Juno Award winner graduated from the Faculty of Music and received an honorary degree in 2004. She has released 28 albums of classical, folk and world music and has composed and arranged hundreds of pieces for guitar.</p> <p><b>Sandra Chapnik</b> was named a Member for her leadership in the community and the legal sector. Chapnik, who graduated from 鶹Ƶ as a member of University College, is a former judge of the Superior Court of Justice for Ontario who has held many leadership roles in the community and is widely recognized for her efforts to promote the advancement of women and encourage best practices in the field.</p> <p><b>Robert Eisenberg</b> was named a Member for his commitment to the revitalization of Toronto’s architectural heritage, as well as his community service benefiting the environment and youth. Eisenberg, who graduated from 鶹Ƶ as a member of University College, is co-founder of York Heritage Properties, which known for its innovative and sustainable work in areas such as Liberty Village in Toronto.</p> <p><b>Patricia Feheley</b>, director of the Feheley Fine Arts and board member of the Cultural Human Resources Council and Canadian Eskimo Arts Council, was named a Member for her long-standing contributions to the country’s art scene, and for her promotion of Inuit art and culture. A former curator of the Ontario Science Centre and consultant with the Smithsonian Institute, Feheley earned a master’s degree in museum studies from 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Information.</p> <p><b>Evelyn L. Forget, </b>known for her work advancing anti-poverty initiatives in Canada and around the world as a leading health economics researcher, was named an Officer of the Order. Forget received her master’s degree and PhD from 鶹Ƶ. She is a professor of economics in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba.</p> <p><b>Gerald Friesen</b>, an author and professor of Canadian history with specialties in western Canada, Manitoba, labour and communication, was named a Member for his contributions to Canadian historical discourse through his inclusive and comprehensive research on Indigenous and ethnic groups in western regions. Friesen earned a PhD from 鶹Ƶ’s department of history in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science.</p> <p><b>Janice Fukakusa</b> was named a Member for her leadership and mentorship in banking, and for her boundless community engagement – notably in education and health care. Fukakusa, who earned a bachelor of arts degree from 鶹Ƶ as a member of Victoria College, is a former chief administrative officer and chief financial officer at RBC. She was also the first female chancellor of Ryerson University.</p> <p><b>Nona Macdonald Heaslip, </b>a retired public relations executive, was named a Member for her ongoing philanthropic contributions to Canada’s arts sector and for supporting academic scholarships across the country. Heaslip, who was the inaugural manager of public relations at 鶹Ƶ, earned a bachelor’s degree from 鶹Ƶ as a member of St. Michael’s College and an honorary degree in 2009. Heaslip has served on the boards of major theatres and, with her late husband, established the William and Nona Heaslip Scholarships to support education projects at 10 Canadian universities.</p> <p><strong>Tomson Highway</strong>: The acclaimed playwright and novelist was promoted to the rank of Officer in recognition of his distinguished contributions to theatre and Canadian culture. Renowned for such works as <em>Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing</em>, <em>The Rez Sisters</em>, <em>The Sage</em>, and <em>The Dancer</em> and the <em>Fool Highway</em> is a former writer-in-residence and received an honorary degree from 鶹Ƶ in 2007.</p> <p><b>William Humber</b>, an author, journalist, environmentalist and educator, was named a Member for his contributions as Canada’s premier baseball historian, highlighting the many ways in which the sport’s history is linked to the nation. Humber, a selector for the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame, earned a bachelor’s degree from 鶹Ƶ.</p> <p><b>Barbara Landau, </b>a lawyer, psychologist and author, was named a Member for her contributions to dispute resolution and family law reform, and for her advocacy of interfaith initiatives. Landau, who earned her bachelor of arts and law degrees from 鶹Ƶ, is lauded for her leadership in family mediation, justice and dispute resolution in Canada.</p> <p><b>Patricia Livingston </b>was named an Officer for her contributions to global health and anesthesia safety, as well as her commitment to improving medical education in underserved communities around the world. Livingston, who completed post-graduate medical training at 鶹Ƶ, is an associate professor at Dalhousie University.</p> <p><b>Pradeep Merchant</b> was named a Member for longstanding contributions to his community, including his philanthropy and leadership in the promotion of bilateral ties between Canada and India. Now serving as site chief of the Division of Neonatology at The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus, Merchant previously completed a post-graduate neonatology fellowship with 鶹Ƶ’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine.</p> <p><b>Lynn Posluns</b> was named a Member for her contributions to research on women’s cognitive health and aging. Posluns, a philanthropist who is the founder and president of the Women’s Brain Health Initiative, earned an undergraduate degree in commerce and finance and a master’s degree in business administration at 鶹Ƶ before embarking on a career that included senior roles within the retail, fashion and private equity sectors.<b>&nbsp;</b></p> <p><b>Alexander Reford</b>, a historian with a master’s degree in history from 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member in recognition of his leadership in the Canadian horticultural community, for bolstering regional tourism, and for promoting both heritage and environmental conservation. A former dean of St. Michael’s College and author of many books and articles on the history of Canada, Reford is the director of Jardins de Métis/Reford Gardens, a 200-acre national historic site on the St. Lawrence River created by his great-grandmother Elsie Reford.</p> <p><b>Graham Sher</b> was named an Officer for his contributions to public health, including his role in the development of Canada’s largest blood system operator. Sher, who completed post-graduate medical training at 鶹Ƶ, served as vice-president of medical, scientific and clinical management of Canadian Blood Services when it launched in 1998, and has been CEO since 2001.</p> <div class="image-with-caption left"> <div><img alt src="/sites/default/files/2017-11-07-sinclair-crop.jpg" style="width: 150px; height: 225px;"><em><span style="font-size:12px;">Murray Sinclair (photo by Lisa Sakulensky)&nbsp;</span></em></div> </div> <p><b>Murray Sinclair,</b> the former senator and former chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, was named a Companion of the Order – the highest rank – in recognition of his commitment to Indigenous legal issues and his dedication to reconciliation. Sinclair, whose Ojibway name Mizanay Gheezhik means “the one who speaks of pictures in the sky,” was the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba and the second in Canada. He received an honorary degree from 鶹Ƶ in 2017.</p> <p><b>Carol Tator</b> was named an Officer for her advocacy of social justice and commitment to identifying and dismantling systemic racism in Canadian society. Tator, who graduated from 鶹Ƶ as a member of University College, is a professor at York University and the co-author, with Frances Henry, of such books as <i>The Colour of Democracy: Racism in Canadian Society</i>.</p> <p><strong>Peter Vaughan</strong>, who received&nbsp;post-graduate medical training at 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to Canada’s health-care system, and for his pioneering leadership in the establishment and advancement of digital health. He&nbsp;was the deputy minister of health and wellness for Nova Scotia, CEO of the Canadian Medical Association and a Royal Canadian Air Force&nbsp;special operation flight surgeon and colonel commandant of the Royal Canadian Medical Services during the war in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2010.</p> <p>Other new additions to the Order included: 鶹Ƶ supporters&nbsp;<strong>Graham Farquharson</strong>,&nbsp;<b>Ralph Chiodo</b>, <b>Leo Goldhar</b>, <b>Vaikuntam Iyer Lakshmanan</b> and <b>Barbara Stymiest</b>; former 鶹Ƶ professors <b>Roderick McInnes</b> and <b>Peter Zandstra</b>; and leaders from the public and private sectors such as&nbsp;<b>Lawson Hunter</b>,<b>&nbsp;</b>who attended the directors’ education program at 鶹Ƶ’s Rotman School of Management.</p> <p><i>Did we miss anybody? One of Canada’s leading cardiologists.&nbsp;</p> <p>These are just a few of the 鶹Ƶ community members – faculty, alumni and supporters – who were newly appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada. <a href="https://www.gg.ca/en/honours/canadian-honours/order-canada">One of the country’s highest civilian honours</a>, the Order of Canada recognizes people whose service, innovations and compassion shape Canadian society, foster imagination and unite people and communities.</p> <p>A total of 61 appointments and promotions were announced&nbsp;Dec. 30&nbsp;by Gov.&nbsp;Gen.&nbsp;<strong>Julie Payette</strong>. They include: Professor&nbsp;<strong>Vivek Goel</strong>, 鶹Ƶ’s former vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives and special adviser to the president and provost who helped guide the university’s pandemic response; <a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/">University Professor&nbsp;</a><strong>Elizabeth Edwards</strong>, an expert in bioremediation and environmental biotechnology; and Professor&nbsp;<strong>Heather Ross</strong>, director of Toronto General Hospital’s cardiac transplant program.</p> <p>Here is the list of 鶹Ƶ faculty, alumni, supporters and friends who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round:</p> <h3>Current and former faculty</h3> <p><strong><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/Yaprak-crop-196x275.jpg" alt="Yaprak Baltacıoğlu">Yaprak Baltacıoğlu</strong>, a professor of public policy at the Munk School of Global Affairs &amp;&nbsp;Public Policy, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her long-standing contributions to Canada’s public service, having distinguished herself in several leadership roles.</p> <p><strong>Susan R. George Bahl</strong>, a professor in the department of pharmacology and toxicology in&nbsp;the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her pioneering contributions to the fields of molecular pharmacology and neuroendocrinology. She holds a Canada Research Chair in molecular neuroscience and is a member of the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience.</p> <p><strong>John Challis</strong>, a University Professor Emeritus in the departments of physiology and obstetrics and gynaecology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for his seminal contributions to the fields of obstetrics and gynaecology, and to health research and innovation in Canada and abroad. Challis previously served as chair of the department of physiology and as 鶹Ƶ’s vice-president, research and associate provost.</p> <p><strong><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/Elizabeth%20Edwards_credit%20Jen%20Hsu.jpg" alt>Elizabeth Edwards</strong>, a University Professor in the department of chemical engineering and applied chemistry in&nbsp;the Faculty of Applied Science &amp;&nbsp;Engineering, was named an Officer of the Order for her foundational contributions to bioremediation and for amplifying the value of cross disciplinary collaboration. Edwards oversees two multidisciplinary research networks at 鶹Ƶ that envision using micro-organisms to create renewable plastics, less expensive pharmaceuticals and energy from waste.</p> <p><strong><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/UofT86164_0827VivekGoel010_0.jpg" alt>Vivek Goel</strong>, a professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and a special adviser to the president and provost who is helping guide 鶹Ƶ’s COVID-19 planning and response, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions as an academic and administrator who is committed to the advancement of public health services, evidence-based health care and research innovation. Goel, who was 鶹Ƶ’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives from 2015 to 2020, was also the founding head of Public Health Ontario.</p> <p><strong><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/jewett-michael-200x200.jpg" alt>Michael A.S. Jewett</strong>, a professor of urology in the department of surgery in&nbsp;the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for his life-saving innovations in surgical oncology and for his advocacy of patient-centred clinical care. Jewett is the sponsor of the Dr. Michael Jewett Graduate Award, awarded annually to a graduate student enrolled in a PhD program associated with the division of urology.</p> <p><strong>Daniel Heath Justice</strong>, a former faculty member in the department of English, was named an Officer of the Order for his contributions to the field of contemporary Indigenous studies in Canada and abroad. A Colorado-born citizen of Canada and the Cherokee First Nation, Justice was awarded 鶹Ƶ’s Ludwik and Estelle Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize in 2010.</p> <p><strong><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/mm%20for%20website.jpg" alt>Morris Moscovitch</strong>, a professor in the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts &amp;&nbsp;Science, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to the fields of clinical neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience, notably his ground-breaking memory research. Moscovitch is a senior scientist at the Rotman Research Institute and Baycrest Centre, where he is also the Max and Gianna Glassman Chair in Neuropsychology and Aging.</p> <p><strong>Daniel John Taylor</strong>, an associate professor and head of the early music program in the Faculty of Music and a countertenor opera singer, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his achievements as an internationally renowned opera singer and for his commitment to mentoring the next generation of Canadian singers.</p> <p><strong><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/HRoss%20headshot-square300x300.jpg" alt>Heather Ross</strong>, a professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named a Member of the Order for her contributions to Canadian cardiac care as a clinician, translational researcher and field leader. A 鶹Ƶ alumna, she is also division head of cardiology at the University Health Network's&nbsp;Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and scientific lead at the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research.</p> <h3>鶹Ƶ and friends</h3> <p><strong>John Borrows</strong>&nbsp;was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his scholarly work on Indigenous rights and legal traditions, which have had a significant impact across Canada and abroad. A member of the Chippewas of the Nawash First Nation, Borrows graduated with a bachelor's degree&nbsp;in history and political science from Victoria College, before going on to earn two degrees from 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Law.</p> <p><strong>Michael S.W. Bradstreet</strong>, who earned a bachelor’s degree in zoology from New College, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of his leadership in the protection of natural habitats and for his innovative bird conservation initiatives. Bradstreet has written extensively about northern birds and mammals, and was a long-time senior adviser with the Nature Conservancy of Canada and served as executive director of Long Point Bird Observatory and Bird Studies Canada.</p> <p><strong>Brian Cherney</strong>, an award-winning composer whose works have been performed and broadcast throughout Canada and in a number of countries around the world, was named a Member of the Order for his lifelong devotion to Canadian music as an internationally renowned composer, educator and scholar. Cherney earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance, a master’s degree in composition and a doctoral&nbsp;degree in musicology from 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Music.</p> <p><strong>Rita Davies</strong>, chair of the Ontario Arts Council and former director of culture for the City of Toronto, was named a Member of the Order for her leadership at the helm of several cultural organizations and for her steadfast devotion to the arts. Davies earned a master’s degree in drama from 鶹Ƶ’s Centre for Drama, Theatre &amp;&nbsp;Performance Studies.</p> <p><strong>Jacalyn Duffin</strong>, a medical historian and haematologist, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her leadership as an academic and mentor in the field of medical history. Duffin earned her medical degree from 鶹Ƶ&nbsp;in 1974.</p> <p><strong>John Hartman</strong>, one of Canada’s preeminent painters, was named a Member of the Order for enriching Canadian contemporary art by bringing landscapes and cityscapes to life on printing plates, canvas and paper. A world-leading astrophysicist.</p> <p>These are just a few members of the&nbsp;鶹Ƶ community – faculty, alumni and supporters – who have been appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in its latest round. Presented by the governor general, the Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours and&nbsp;recognizes people whose service, innovations and compassion shape&nbsp;Canadian society, foster imagination and unite people and communities.</p> <p>The latest list of Order of Canada appointments and promotions was announced Friday&nbsp;by Governor General&nbsp;<strong>Julie Payette</strong>, herself a 鶹Ƶ alumna. It includes Professor&nbsp;<strong>Cristina Amon</strong>,&nbsp;who was the first female dean of 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/">University Professor</a>&nbsp;<strong>Eugenia Kumacheva</strong>, an expert in polymers and nanoparticles;&nbsp;<strong>Bill Graham</strong>, the chancellor of Trinity College; Associate Professor&nbsp;<strong>Philip Berger</strong>, a family physician and a longtime advocate for vulnerable patients; and <strong>Sara Seager</strong>, an astrophysicist&nbsp;who <a href="/news/life-venus-sara-seager-it-all-began-shortcut-through-u-t-s-campus">recently played a role in a discovery that points to potential life in the atmosphere of Venus</a>.</p> <p>Here is a list of 鶹Ƶ faculty, alumni, supporters and friends who were appointed to, or promoted within, the Order of Canada in the latest round:</p> <h3>Current and former faculty</h3> <p><strong><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/40942032263_181bc1b06a_o.jpg" alt>Cristina Amon</strong>, a professor of mechanical engineering and dean emerita of 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering, was named a Member of the Order for her contributions to the advancement of the field of engineering, and to research and innovation across Canada. Under her leadership, Canada’s top-ranked engineering school has become a global hub for inter-disciplinary research and education. Her commitment to outreach and diversity led to the number of women faculty members at 鶹Ƶ Engineering doubling in the last decade and the number of women&nbsp;enrolled as first-year undergraduates exceeding&nbsp;40 per cent in recent years.</p> <p><strong>Philip Berger</strong>, an associate professor in the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his longstanding efforts to bring the social determinants of health to the forefront of medical care and for his strong advocacy on behalf of vulnerable patients. Berger, who was named to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2017, co-founded the Toronto HIV Primary Care Physicians Group and established the HIV Project Centre Primary Care Mentor Program.</p> <p><strong>Allan Borodin</strong>, University Professor in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of his expertise in theoretical computer science and for his development of nationally recognized computational models and analyses. Borodin is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)&nbsp;and a recipient of the 2008 CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize, and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Canadian Association of Computer Science.</p> <p><strong><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/9552-9552-drake.jpg" alt>James Drake</strong>, a professor of surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and surgeon-in-chief at the Hospital for Sick Children, was named a Member of the Order for his leadership in the field of pediatric neurosurgery and for his contributions to the treatment of complex childhood disorders. Drake is a senior associate scientist at the SickKids Research Institute, leads the Centre of Image Guided Innovation and Therapeutic Intervention&nbsp;and is co-lead of the Centre of Excellence in Image Guided Care. He is also co-director of the Centre of Mathematical Medicine at 鶹Ƶ’s Fields Institute.</p> <p><strong>Bill Graham</strong>, the chancellor of Trinity College and former federal minister of foreign affairs and minister of national defence, was promoted to Officer of the Order in recognition of his sustained contributions to politics and academia, and for his philanthropic endeavours. He earned his honours bachelor’s degree in modern history as a member of Trinity and, in 1964, received his law degree – winning the gold medal – from 鶹Ƶ. He also taught at the Faculty of Law before being elected to parliament.</p> <p><strong><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/Photo_Dept%20website%20June%202015.jpg" alt="Eugena Kumacheva">Eugenia Kumacheva</strong>, University Professor in the department of chemistry in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science and an expert in polymers and nanoparticles, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of her contributions to chemistry, notably through microfluidics and polymer research, and for her efforts as an advocate for women in science. A Canada Research Chair in Advanced Polymer Materials and fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Kumacheva’s research has been backed by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Connaught Fund, and the L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Award, among others.</p> <p><strong>Marietta Orlov</strong> was an associate professor in the piano performance department at 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Music and a major donor to the university. She died on Nov. 7, 2020 at age 88. Orlov was named a Member of the Order for her lifelong contributions as a piano pedagogue and for her enduring devotion to the next generation of Canadian musicians.</p> <h3>鶹Ƶ and friends</h3> <p><strong>Martha Billes</strong>, business leader and controlling shareholder of Canadian Tire who graduated from 鶹Ƶ in 1963, was named an Officer of the Order for her achievements in business and for her philanthropy, notably through the creation of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, a nationwide foundation dedicated to providing access to sport and activities to disadvantaged children.</p> <p><strong>William Blaikie</strong>, a former&nbsp;member of the House of Commons who graduated with a master of divinity degree from Emmanuel College, Toronto School of Theology in 1977, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his lifelong contributions to parliamentary service, and for his steadfast commitment to progressive change and social activism.</p> <p><strong>Philip Michael Epstein</strong>, a distinguished litigator and founding partner of Epstein Cole LLP, was named a Member of the Order for his leadership in Canadian family law and for pioneering programs in dispute resolution now emulated across the country. Epstein earned his law degree from 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Law in 1968.</p> <p><strong>Marcia Kran</strong>, an expert in criminal law and human rights law and member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of her contributions to the advancement of international human rights and development, and for her steadfast advocacy of democratic governance. Kran graduated from 鶹Ƶ with a master’s degree in political science in 1989.</p> <p><strong>Judy Matthews</strong>, a retired urban planner and philanthropist, was named a Member of the Order for her ground-breaking contributions to Toronto’s cultural and urban landscapes&nbsp;as an urban planner and philanthropist. Matthews earned a bachelor's degree from Trinity College.</p> <p><strong>Lucy Lynn McIntyre</strong>, a professor emerita in the department of community health sciences at the University of Calgary, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her influential research on health equity and food insecurity, and for her contributions to public health policies in Canada. McIntyre earned a medical degree and a master of health science degree from 鶹Ƶ, where she also completed residency training in community medicine.</p> <p><strong>Sarah Milroy</strong>, who, along with her husband <strong>Thomas Milroy,</strong> donated to the Miner’s Lamp Innovation Fund in support of research into the prevention and early detection of severe mental illness at 鶹Ƶ’s department of psychiatry, was named a Member of the Order for her promotion of Canadian art and artists as an editor, publisher, critic and curator.</p> <p><strong>Peggy Nash</strong>, a former member of parliament and senior labour leader, was named a Member of the Order in recognition of her contributions to women’s employment equity, human rights and gender representation in all levels of public office. Nash earned a bachelor's degree from 鶹Ƶ as a member of Victoria College.</p> <p><strong>John David Runnalls</strong>, former president of the International Institute for Sustainable Development, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of his decades-long commitment to&nbsp;promoting environmentally sustainable development around the world. He graduated from 鶹Ƶ’s Faculty of Arts &amp; Science in 1966&nbsp;as a member of Victoria College, with a bachelor of arts in political science and economics.</p> <p><strong>Sara Seager</strong>, who graduated with an honours bachelor of science from the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science in 1994 as a member of University College, was named an Officer of the Order in recognition of her multidisciplinary research that has contributed to transforming the study of extrasolar planets into a full-fledged planetary science. Seager is one of the world’s leading astrophysicists and author of the critically acclaimed memoir <em>The Smallest Lights in The Universe</em>.</p> <p><strong>Peter Warrian </strong>of&nbsp;the Munk School of Global Affairs &amp; Public Policy&nbsp;was named a Member of the Order in recognition of his expertise as a lead researcher in the Canadian steel industry, and for his philanthropic contributions to international health issues.&nbsp;Warrian has donated&nbsp;in support of the Christianity and the Arts course at St. Michael’s College, the Canadian Studies Interdisciplinary Prize and the Peter Warrian Graduate Award.</p> <p><strong>Kenneth Wilson</strong>, an associate professor at Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine who earned his medical degree from 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for his nationally recognized expertise in reconstructive and plastic surgery, and for his volunteer work on international medical missions.</p> <h3>Honorary degree recipients</h3> <p>Two recipients of honorary degrees from 鶹Ƶ were named Companions of the Order of Canada.</p> <p><strong>Monique Begin</strong>, who received an honorary degree from 鶹Ƶ in 1998, was promoted to Companion of the Order “for her lifelong contributions to public health, education and global human rights, and for consistently strengthening Canada’s international reputation in these fields.”</p> <p><strong>Mark Tewksbury</strong>, an Olympian who received an honorary degree from 鶹Ƶ in 2019, was named a Companion of the Order “for his athletic excellence and sport leadership, and for championing equity, inclusion and human rights, both on and off the field of play.”</p> <p><em>Did we miss anybody? A church minister and politician who was part of Canada’s early LGBTQ movement and performed one of the country's first same-sex marriages.&nbsp;And a professor in the Faculty of Medicine who's known around the world for his expertise on diabetes.&nbsp;</p> <p>These are just a few of the University of Toronto community members – faculty, alumni and supporters&nbsp;– who recently joined or were promoted within the Order of Canada, one of the country's&nbsp;highest civilian honours.</p> <p>The latest appointees to the Order, and promotions within it, were announced today by Governor General <strong>Julie Payette</strong> –&nbsp;herself a 鶹Ƶ alumna. The long list of honourees with ties to 鶹Ƶ include alumnae such as&nbsp;<strong>Anne Innis Dagg</strong>, a zoologist and feminist, and&nbsp;<strong>Cheri DiNovo</strong>, a&nbsp;reverend and former MPP. It also includes faculty such as <strong>Bernard Zinman</strong>, a professor<strong>&nbsp;</strong>in the department of medicine and a clinician-scientist at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute who was promoted to Officer of the Order “for his contributions to diabetes research and for his development of advanced preventative therapies.”</p> <p>Prominent supporters of the university and its partners were recognized, too.</p> <p><strong>Heather Reisman</strong>, the founder, chair and CEO of Indigo, was promoted to Officer of the Order of Canada “for her contributions to Canadian book publishing and children's literacy, and for her transformational philanthropy.” Reisman and her husband&nbsp;<strong>Gerald Schwartz</strong>&nbsp;earlier this year donated $100 million to 鶹Ƶ&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a href="/news/landmark-100-million-gift-university-toronto-gerald-schwartz-and-heather-reisman-will-power">the largest gift ever in the university’s history</a>&nbsp;– to establish the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre and the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/GettyImages-534152840.jpg" alt></p> <p><em>Heather Reisman, the founder and CEO of Indigo, was promoted to Officer. It includes:</p> <p><strong>Donald Dingwell</strong>, a world-renowned volcanologist, was named an Officer of the Order for his contributions to the field of volcanology and for promoting scientific involvement in public policy.&nbsp;Now teaching in Germany, Dingwell began his academic career at 鶹Ƶ.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Mark Henkelman</strong>, a professor emeritus in the department of medical biophysics in the Faculty of Medicine,&nbsp; was named an Officer of the Order&nbsp;for his pioneering contributions to the field of medical imaging. He's a senior scientist emeritus at the Hospital for Sick Children, director of the Mouse Imaging Centre and a past winner of the Killam Prize for his substantial contributions to the health sciences.</p> <p><strong>Mel Watkins</strong>, a professor emeritus in the department of economics, was named a a Member of the Order for&nbsp;“his contributions as a political economist and for his advocacy of social justice.” He was the chief author of the 1968 federal report, known as the Watkins Report,&nbsp;on the costs and benefits of foreign ownership of the Canadian economy.</p> <p><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/heritageutm2_180-crop.jpg" alt></p> <p><em>Josef Svoboda with crew taking measurements, circa 1980s-90s (photo courtesy of Steve Jaunzems/University of Toronto Mississauga)</em></p> <p><strong>Josef Svoboda</strong>, a professor emeritus of biology at 鶹Ƶ Mississauga and an expert on Arctic ecology, was named an Officer of the Order for “his pioneering research on tundra ecosystems and for his lifelong mentorship of scientists studying the Arctic.”</p> <p><b>Ken Greenberg</b>,<b>&nbsp;</b>an urban designer, teacher, writer and former adjunct professor in the master of urban design program in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, was named a Member of the Order.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Anthony Miller</strong>, a professor emeritus in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health who has also donated to funds supporting research at 鶹Ƶ, was named a Member of the Order for his contributions in cancer epidemiology, as well as&nbsp;cancer control policies and practices.</p> <p><strong>Robin McLeod</strong>, a professor of general surgery in the Faculty of Medicine, was named an Officer of the Order for her contributions to surgical oncology and innovations in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Shoo Lee</strong>, a professor in obstetrics and gynaecology who is cross-appointed to pediatrics in 鶹Ƶ's Faculty of Medicine, was also appointed an Officer of the Order for his contributions in neonatal medicine.&nbsp;</p> <h3>鶹Ƶ</h3> <p>A number of prominent 鶹Ƶ alumni were also named to the Order, or promoted within its ranks, in the latest round – but perhaps one of the more familiar names to the 鶹Ƶ community is Innis Dagg, who was named a Member of the Order.</p> <p>The daughter of&nbsp;<strong>Harold Innis</strong>, a political economist, communications studies pioneer and namesake of 鶹Ƶ's Innis College, Innis Dagg obtained a master's in genetics at 鶹Ƶ in 1956. Soon after, at 23, she arranged to stay at a farm in South Africa – using only her initials in correspondence to avoid discrimination – in order to study giraffes in the wild. She's credited with being the first to conduct system observations of a large mammal in the wild, even before Jane Goodall and Dian&nbsp;Fossey studied primates.&nbsp;</p> <p>After returning to Canada and facing sexism in her field,&nbsp;she promoted gender equality on top of continuing her ground-breaking scientific work. In addition to being named a Member of the Order of Canada,&nbsp;<a href="/news/woman-who-loves-giraffes-pioneering-researcher-comes-u-t-screening-documentary-about-her-life">she's the subject of a recent documentary,&nbsp;<em>The Woman Who Loved Giraffes</em>.</a></p> <p><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/Anne-main-photo_0.jpg" alt></p> <p><em>Anne Innis Dagg, seen here at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago feeding a giraffe (photo by Elaisa Vargas)</em></p> <p>DiNovo, another alumna, <a href="https://www.dailyxtra.com/cheri-dinovo-women-early-lgbtq2-movement-163540">became involved in queer activism in the early 1970s</a>. She served as an MPP for Parkdale&nbsp;– High Park for 11 years until leaving politics to return to the church. The first LGBTQ critic in the history of the Ontario legislature, she was named a Member of the Order “for her contributions to provincial politics and her lifelong advocacy of social justice.”</p> <p>Other 鶹Ƶ alumni were recognized for contributions to everything from health care to the arts and gymnastics.</p> <p>Alumnus <strong>Larry Rosen</strong>, chairman and CEO of the menswear chain Harry Rosen, was appointed a Member of the Order “for establishing one of Canada's most valuable retail brands.”</p> <p><strong>Duncan Sinclair</strong>, who received his master of science degree at 鶹Ƶ and went on to assume senior academic positions at Queen's University, was appointed a Member of the Order for his contributions to health care.&nbsp;</p> <p><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/GettyImages-850743482.jpg" alt></p> <p><em>鶹Ƶ alumna&nbsp;<strong>Cheri DiNovo&nbsp;</strong>was the first LGBTQ critic in the history of the Ontario legislature (Bernard Weil/Toronto Star via Getty Images)</em></p> <p>Sister <strong>Sue Mosteller&nbsp;</strong>who received her bachelor's from St. Michael's College in 1968, was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for her work helping people with intellectual disabilities.</p> <p>Rev. <strong>James Scott</strong>, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree&nbsp;from Victoria College in religious studies, was named an Officer of the Order for his work in advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and his advocacy of restorative justice.&nbsp;</p> <p>Alumna <strong>Joyce Hisey</strong> was named a Member of the Order as a member for her contributions to figure skating&nbsp;as a judge, referee and mentor.&nbsp;</p> <p>Alumnus <strong>Stuart McGill</strong> was named a Member of the Order for his contributions to understanding the biomechanics of the spinal column and the development of rehabilitation programs.&nbsp;</p> <p><img class="migrated-asset" src="/sites/default/files/GettyImages-524606380.jpg" alt></p> <p><em>Slava Corn, who graduated from 鶹Ƶ in 1967, was recognized for her contributions to gymnastics as a judge, administrator and volunteer (photo by Paul Cunningham/Corbis via Getty Images)</em></p> <p><strong>Wayne Fairhead</strong>, a graduate of the master in education program who has taught at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, was named a Member of the Order&nbsp;for his leadership of the Sears Drama Festival and for inspiring youth to take up the theatre arts.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Daniel Hays</strong>, an alumnus and lawyer who was named to the Senate by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in 1984, was made an Officer of the Order for his contributions to the province of Alberta and distinguished public service, including in the Senate.&nbsp;</p> <p>Alumna&nbsp;<strong>Slava Corn&nbsp;</strong>was named an Officer of the Order for her contributions to gymnastics as a judge, administrator and volunteer.</p> <p><em>Did we miss anybody?
