I was really interested in that part of the research.鈥

Since joining the Phillips lab, Evans has focused on how plants control carbon supply towards the production of isoprenoids 鈥 high-value compounds that are critical to plant growth, defense and crop productivity and also have a range of industrial and pharmaceutical applications.

Her research has had a huge impact on the field. In 2024 alone, Evans published two papers in the prestigious Nature journals, as first author.

The most recent paper, published in Nature Plants in October, sheds light on a decades-old mystery: the origins of pyruvate, a vital precursor for production of isoprenoids, amino acids and fatty acids in chloroplasts, which are responsible for plant photosynthesis. The research revealed that Rubisco, a critical enzyme that鈥檚 responsible for fixing carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, also plays a secondary role in supplying pyruvate.

This discovery not only redefines how scientists understand plant metabolism, but also solves a long-standing paradox of the origin of pyruvate, with Evans鈥檚 findings providing a critical link between photosynthesis and the production of isoprenoids. By uncovering how plants channel carbon toward these valuable compounds, her research opens the door to innovative biotechnological strategies for engineering crops with enhanced productivity and resilience.

The previous paper, published in Nature Communications in February, laid the groundwork for how a key metabolic pathway could be engineered in plants for synthetic biology applications.

All the more impressive: Evans managed these accomplishments while carrying out her responsibilities as mother to a young child 鈥 which she credits to a strong support system of family, her spouse, friends and peers. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a learning curve鈥 but I have tried to take everything one step at a time, and check myself every day,鈥 she says.

Evans鈥檚 scholarly excellence resulted in her earning the Roberta Bondar Graduate Student Excellence Award last fall. She was also named a Provost's Postdoctoral Fellow, and will carry out her postdoctoral research in the lab of Eliana Gonzales-Vigil, assistant professor in 麻豆视频 Scarborough's department of biological sciences.

Reflecting on her decision to come to 麻豆视频, Evans reveals she doubted her chances of being granted admission to Canada鈥檚 top-ranked university. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥極h my God 鈥 who am I to be at the University of Toronto?鈥欌 she says. 鈥淏ut I wanted to be at a very good university, and I had to keep trying to aim higher and higher for myself.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Mon, 23 Dec 2024 15:29:58 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 310966 at Reimagining the curb: 麻豆视频 alum helps cities design smarter streets /news/reimagining-curb-u-t-alum-helps-cities-design-smarter-streets Reimagining the curb: 麻豆视频 alum helps cities design smarter streets

Christopher.Sorensen Fri, 12/20/2024 - 10:26

Cutline

Marian Mendoza, who earned an honours bachelor of arts in geography and international relations at 麻豆视频, is among a new generation of city-builders using data and emerging technologies to build more inclusive and sustainable cities (supplied image)

David Goldberg

Topic

Our Community

麻豆视频

Cities

Faculty of Arts & On a recent flight to Toronto, one flight attendant even grabbed the intercom to announce his presence on the plane. That鈥檚 in addition to a torrent of requests to speak to media, appear on podcasts and read academic papers.

As he prepares to travel to Stockholm on Dec. 10 to officially accept the honour alongside co-winner John J. It鈥檚 also why he鈥檚 urging companies to devote more funding to AI safety research as they rush to explore the myriad ways the technology can be used to make our lives better 鈥 from finding cures for deadly diseases to discovering new materials to help combat climate change.

At 麻豆视频, Hinton has also taken on an advisory role at the Schwartz Reisman Institute of Technology and Society, where researchers are at the forefront of exploring AI safety and other issues around the adoption of new technologies. In particular, he highlights the work of Roger Grosse and David Duvenaud 鈥 both AI safety experts who are associate professors in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science and Schwartz Reisman Chairs in Technology and Society (he says Grosse convinced him to go public with his concerns last year after he left a senior research position at Google).

The institute and 麻豆视频 more broadly have an opportunity to become a world leader in figuring out how to guard against AI threats, he says. 鈥淚 think that can be a world-class centre for figuring out whether there鈥檚 a way to make a superintelligence 鈥 which we all think is coming 鈥 not want to take control.鈥

Hinton鈥檚 moment in the spotlight has been a long time coming 鈥 and is testament to his curious mind, persistent nature and willingness to go against the grain.

As a child attending a 鈥渕ildly Christian school鈥 in England, he says he often felt like an outsider because he refused to accept the idea of a god without evidence (he remains an atheist). Decades later, Hinton again found himself on the fringe as he and a handful of researchers, including the Salk Institute for Biological Science鈥檚 Terry Sejnowsky, who did his PhD research under Hopfield, explored the idea that the human brain was essentially a bunch of connection strengths between neurons 鈥 not a series of logical expressions, as many in the field then believed.

That key insight now forms the basis of today neural nets.

鈥淭here were many times when I could easily have given up and sort of joined the mainstream,鈥 Hinton says. 鈥淏ut I think my experience as a child made me far more resistant to that.鈥

A self-described cognitive scientist who works in the field of computer science, Hinton says he was surprised to win a Nobel Prize in Physics. But the Nobel committee noted he used ideas from physics to create the Boltzmann machine, which can be used to recognize elements in data. The Boltzmann machine, in turn, was based on the Hopfield network, which was invented by his co-laureate.

Hinton is donating an early Boltzmann chip, about the size of a postage stamp, to the Nobel Prize Museum 鈥 and has decided to use the money from his win to set up a prize for young researchers at the annual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems. He has also donated to a Canadian charity that supports works with Indigenous communities to address water challenges, and has plans to give to another that supports neurodiverse young adults.

For young researchers hoping to follow in his footsteps? Hinton advises: focus on a problem that really excites you, don鈥檛 become swayed by conventional thinking, persevere until you know you鈥檙e wrong 鈥 and feel free to wander between different research disciplines.

鈥淚f you're really interested in chasing a criminal, you don't stop at a state border,鈥 he says. 鈥淭hat's a stupid thing to do 鈥 so, the boundaries of fields, you just ignore them.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Wed, 04 Dec 2024 17:56:55 +0000 lanthierj 310863 at
