We hope that the new Institutional Equity Commitments website will foster an increased awareness of what we have achieved together so far and inspire participation in the many initiatives yet to come.鈥濃</p> <p>Developed through collaboration among the Office of the President, the Office of the Vice-President &amp; Provost and the Office of the Vice-President, People Strategy, Equity &amp; Culture, the Institutional Equity Commitments website is an evolution of a pilot project that began in 2021. The pilot version, known as the Commitments Dashboard, was created to track the implementation of Anti-Black Racism Task Force recommendations and later expanded to include Antisemitism Working Group recommendations. Over the years, there has been a growing need to enhance the existing site.鈥</p> <p>鈥淕uided by our community鈥檚 feedback, we have designed a site that is easier to navigate and clearly demonstrates institutional accountability while celebrating our shared progress,鈥 said 麻豆视频鈥檚 Vice-President, People Strategy, Equity &amp; Culture Kelly Hannah-Moffat.</p> <p>The updated website has a redesigned look and enhanced user experience, including featured stories, progress snapshots, and status updates on the recommendations. Visitors can filter the entire page by specific report. Additionally, divisions or offices responsible for reporting progress on each commitment are now identified.鈥</p> <p>鈥淭he nature of equity work is that it is an ongoing journey, characterized by continual growth and change,鈥 said Jodie Glean-Mitchell, executive director, equity, diversity and inclusion.</p> <p>鈥淭he newly revised Institutional Equity Commitments website provides the university with a tool to put EDI accountability into action as we engage our collective responsibility to foster an equitable and inclusive university.鈥濃 鈥</p> <p>Members of the 麻豆视频 community are encouraged to explore the new site and consider how the working group recommendations might inform change in their own areas of the university. Feedback on the site and stories about local progress on EDI commitments are also welcome and can be submitted using the <a href="https://commitments.utoronto.ca/share-feedback/">feedback form</a>.鈥</p> <p>鈥淲e are fortunate to have a very engaged community of students, faculty, librarians and staff who make important contributions to this work, and we鈥檙e glad to have their continued input,鈥 said Trevor Young, 麻豆视频's vice-president and provost. 鈥淥ur ongoing goal is to better deliver and report on the institutional commitments we've made to equity and to improve transparency and accountability.鈥</p> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-caption field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>麻豆视频 launches new Institutional Equity Commitments website</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-02/UofT11637_20160520_CarvedCoatofArmsatUC_5-lpr.jpg?h=56d0ca2e&amp;itok=Ffwy8NJ_ 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-02/UofT11637_20160520_CarvedCoatofArmsatUC_5-lpr.jpg?h=56d0ca2e&amp;itok=bbL83xJ_ 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-02/UofT11637_20160520_CarvedCoatofArmsatUC_5-lpr.jpg?h=56d0ca2e&amp;itok=Gc_l-vlK 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-02/UofT11637_20160520_CarvedCoatofArmsatUC_5-lpr.jpg?h=56d0ca2e&amp;itok=Ffwy8NJ_" alt="麻豆视频 coat of arms carved in to University College arch"> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-cutline field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">(photo by Johnny Guatto)</div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden clearfix"> <ul class="links field__items"> <li><a href="/news/tags/equity" hreflang="en">Equity</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/kelly-hannah-moffat" hreflang="en">Kelly Hannah-Moffat</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/provost" hreflang="en">Provost</a></li> <li><a href="/taxonomy/term/6864" hreflang="en">People Strategy</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/diversity" hreflang="en">Diversity</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/anti-asian-racism-working-group" hreflang="en">Anti-Asian Racism Working Group</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/anti-black-racism" hreflang="en">Anti-Black Racism</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/anti-asian-racism" hreflang="en">Anti-Asian Racism</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/antisemitism" hreflang="en">Antisemitism</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/president" hreflang="en">President</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Melinda Mattos鈥</div> <div class="field field--name-field-hide field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> Tue, 13 Feb 2024 16:10:33 +0000 ksoobria 306094 at 麻豆视频 marks National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women /news/u-t-marks-national-day-remembrance-and-action-violence-against-women <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">麻豆视频 marks National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women </span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-12/087A4970-crop.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=HAoObj6R 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2023-12/087A4970-crop.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=vRbHZM10 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2023-12/087A4970-crop.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=nKA6CD7s 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-12/087A4970-crop.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=HAoObj6R" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2023-12-06T14:44:20-05:00" title="Wednesday, December 6, 2023 - 14:44" class="datetime">Wed, 12/06/2023 - 14:44</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>麻豆视频 students, faculty, staff, librarians and alumni marked the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women at a memorial led by the Faculty of Applied Science &amp; But the new research suggests that labels explicitly reflecting value judgments, rather than the facts used to reach those judgments, might yield ML models that assess rule adherence and rule violation in a manner that humans would deem acceptable.</p> <p>To reach this conclusion, the authors conducted experiments to see how individuals behaved when asked to provide factual assessments as opposed to when asked to judge whether a rule had been followed.</p> <div class="align-center"> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2023-05/thumbnail_composite-trio-inside-750-500.jpg" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> </div> <p><em>From left to right: MIT PhD student Aparna Balagopalan, SRI Director Gillian Hadfield and SRI Faculty Affiliate Marzyeh Ghassemi (supplied photos)</em></p> <p>For example, one group of participants was asked to label dogs that exhibited certain characteristics 鈥 namely, those that were large, not well groomed, or aggressive. Meanwhile, another group of participants was instead asked whether or not the dogs shown to them violate a building pet code predicated on the same characteristics, rather than assessing the presence or absence of specific features.</p> <p>The first group was asked to make a factual assessment 鈥 and the second, a normative one.</p> <p>Hadfield says the researchers were surprised by the findings.</p> <p>鈥淲hen you ask people a normative question, they answer it differently than when you ask them a factual question,鈥 she says.</p> <p>Human participants in the experiments were more likely to recognize (and label) a factual feature than the violation of an explicit rule predicated on the factual feature.</p> <p>Current thinking on this topic presumes that calibrating AI behaviour to human conventions requires value-neutral, observational data from which AI can best reason toward sound normative conclusions.</p> <p>But this new research suggests that labelling data with labels that explicitly reflect value judgments, rather than the facts used to reach those judgments, might yield ML models that assess rule-adherence and rule-violation in a manner that we humans would deem acceptable.</p> <p>The results of these experiments showed that ML models trained on normative labels achieve higher accuracy in predicting human normative judgments. Essentially, they are better at predicting. Therefore, if we train automated judgment systems on factual labels 鈥 which is how several existing systems are being built 鈥 they are likely overpredicting rule violations.</p> <p>The implications of the research are significant. Not only does it show that reasoning about norms is qualitatively different from reasoning about facts, but it also has important real-world ramifications.</p> <p>鈥淧eople could say, 鈥業 don鈥檛 want to be judged by a machine 鈥 I want to be judged by a human,鈥 given that we鈥檝e got evidence to show that the machine will not judge them properly,鈥 Hadfield says.</p> <p>鈥淥ur research shows that this factor has a bigger effect [on an ML model鈥檚 performance] than things like model architecture, label noise and subsampling 鈥 factors that are often looked to for errors in prediction.鈥</p> <p>Ensuring that the data used to train decision-making ML algorithms mirrors the results of human judgment 鈥 rather than simple factual observation 鈥 is no small feat. Proposed approaches include ensuring that the training data used to reproduce human assessments is collected in an appropriate context.</p> <p>To this end, the authors of the paper recommend that the creators of trained models and of datasets supplement those products with clear descriptions of the approaches used to tag the data 鈥 taking special care to establish whether the tags relate to facts perceived or judgments applied.</p> <p>鈥淲e need to train on and evaluate normative labels. We have to pay the money for normative labels, and probably for specific applications. We should be a lot better at documenting that labelling practice. Otherwise, it鈥檚 not a fair judgment system,鈥 Hadfield says.</p> <p>鈥淭here鈥檚 a ton more research we need to be doing on this.鈥</p> <p>The study was funded by the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society and the Vector Institute, among others.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 23 May 2023 22:08:43 +0000 siddiq22 301760 at 麻豆视频 receives $200-million grant to support Acceleration Consortium's 鈥榮elf-driving labs鈥 research /news/u-t-receives-200-million-grant-support-acceleration-consortium-s-self-driving-labs-research <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">麻豆视频 receives $200-million grant to support Acceleration Consortium's 鈥榮elf-driving labs鈥 research</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-05/UofT87591_2020-12-10-Isynth-Catscreen-96_25-crop.jpeg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=ElaHXrL9 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2023-05/UofT87591_2020-12-10-Isynth-Catscreen-96_25-crop.jpeg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=FOffWHvn 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2023-05/UofT87591_2020-12-10-Isynth-Catscreen-96_25-crop.jpeg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=aH9UsTg5 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-05/UofT87591_2020-12-10-Isynth-Catscreen-96_25-crop.jpeg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=ElaHXrL9" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2023-04-28T19:17:42-04:00" title="Friday, April 28, 2023 - 19:17" class="datetime">Fri, 04/28/2023 - 19:17</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p>Funding from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund will support the Acceleration Consortium鈥檚 work on 鈥渟elf-driving labs,鈥 which combine AI, robotics and advanced computing to discover new materials (photo by Johnny Guatto)</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/tabassum-siddiqui" hreflang="en">Tabassum Siddiqui</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/breaking-research" hreflang="en">Breaking Research</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/acceleration-consortium" hreflang="en">Acceleration Consortium</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/institutional-strategic-initiatives" hreflang="en">Institutional Strategic Initiatives</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/leah-cowen" hreflang="en">Leah Cowen</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/artificial-intelligence" hreflang="en">Artificial Intelligence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/chemistry" hreflang="en">Chemistry</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/computer-science" hreflang="en">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/equity" hreflang="en">Equity</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp;
