鶹Ƶ ranks among world’s top universities in QS World University Rankings

The University of Toronto’s strong academic and research performance continues to rank among the best in the world – and is ranked the best in Canada – in the 2013 QS World University Rankings released today.

鶹Ƶ tied for 17th with the University of Edinburgh, up from 19th a year earlier.

“In a difficult funding climate, it is gratifying that we have been able to maintain a top-20 ranking,” said President David Naylor. “This result is a testament to the enduring excellence of our faculty, staff, and students.”

This is the most comprehensive QS World University Rankings in its history. More than 100 universities were added this year, making it an 800-strong list with 76 countries represented. The rankings took into account 62,094 academic and 27,957 employer responses, making both surveys the largest of their kind in the world.

Five Canadian universities were ranked among the top 100 schools.

Ben Sowter, head of research at QS, said that while Canadian universities continued their steady performance in the rankings this year with two more schools reaching the top 100, he cautioned that faculty-student ratio scores generally have dropped.

“This could be a sign that Canada’s lack of public funding for post-secondary education, as highlighted in the latest Education at a Glance Report by the OECD, is beginning to take its toll on university resources,” he said.
